Discover Saint Charles
Accommodation in Saint Charles
Saint Charles combines nature experiences along the Fox River with a multifaceted history. If you would like to make your trip varied, you can choose between trails through nature preserves, water activities, historic sites, and a historic walking tour featuring 27 locations. When searching for a holiday apartment, it is therefore particularly useful to consider which themes you want to shape your days.
Nature and water along the Fox River
The Fox River runs through the center of downtown St. Charles. In St. Charles, it offers a wide range of water activities. Pottawatomie Park also provides regional access to the Fox River Trail. In addition, Pottawatomie Park has a designated boat launch on the Fabulous Fox River Water Trail.
The nature preserves also offer a variety of highlights. Norris Woods Nature Preserve contains red and white oaks that are more than 200 years old. Along the Fox River Trail, this area is used extensively by walkers and cyclists. At Ferson Creek Fen Nature Preserve, you will find boardwalks, hiking trails, and viewpoints with access from the trail, among other features. Anyone wishing to combine nature observation with physical activity can include these two natural areas in their daily plans.
History in downtown
The Central Historic District encompasses downtown St. Charles and the original town laid out in the 1830s. The district also includes the Hotel Baker, built in 1928 in the Romantic Revival style and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The St. Charles History Museum is located in the 1928 McCornack Oil Company building at 215 East Main Street.
The permanent exhibition “The Makings of St. Charles” traces the development of the community from its founding as a settlement, through its time as a Civil War training site and its growth into a destination for day trips, to the present day. Camp Kane is also one of four surviving Civil War training sites in Illinois. A historic walking tour presents 27 locations, providing a clear framework for discovering the various facets of the town’s history.
Pottawatomie Park also has a special place in history: it opened on May 20, 1912, as the first park opened under a new Illinois Parks Act. Rides on the Paddlewheel Riverboat include an audio program featuring historic sights and stories along the river.
Which location suits your trip?
If you want to focus on culture, the Central Historic District, the museum, Camp Kane, and the historic walking tour can form the focus of your days. For a nature- and water-oriented trip, on the other hand, the Fox River, Pottawatomie Park, and the trails and viewpoints in the nature preserves are ideal. When searching for accommodation, you can compare these priorities with how you would like to structure your days without having to commit to just one type of vacation.
An additional option is a 9-hole golf course directly on the Fox River. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and features an island green. This adds a sporting activity to the historical and nature-oriented options available in Saint Charles.
