Clinton County combines a vast waterscape with hiking trails, birdwatching and local history. With 26,000 acres of water, Carlyle Lake is the largest man-made lake in Illinois. At the lake, you can combine boating and fishing with nature watching: bald eagles, ospreys, cormorants, great blue herons, and numerous species of shorebirds and songbirds can be spotted here.

Experiences on the Water and Hiking Trails

Fishing is possible on more than 2,000 acres of the lake. This means you can enjoy different kinds of experiences at Carlyle Lake: a boat trip, time by the water with a fishing rod, or watching the birds. Which one shapes your day depends on whether you mainly want to be active on the water or observe wildlife.

There are also concrete ways to experience the landscape on land. Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area has hiking trails totaling more than nine miles. The Cherokee Trail passes through a mature oak-hickory forest and gently rolling terrain. The extensive choice of hiking trails and the detailed description of a single trail appeal to different interests: sometimes the total length of the trail network matters, and sometimes the landscape along a particular trail.

The Carlyle Lake Visitor Center is located in the Dam West Recreation Area. There are also two boat ramps on the Kaskaskia River that provide access for fishing. These are two specific location details to help you plan your day: the location of the Visitor Center and access to fishing on the river.

History and Local Discoveries

Burnside Cemetery is a restored cemetery; its gravestones date to the 1830s. The Clinton County Historical Society Museum is dedicated to preserving Clinton County’s heritage. This includes education, written and photographic documentation, artifacts, and oral histories. The cemetery and museum offer different ways to explore history: here, the dated gravestones provide the historical context, while there, different forms of sharing and preserving the past take center stage.

Wine is also one of the offerings that can add variety to your stay. At the tasting room of Twelve Oaks Vineyard, guests can sample different varieties of award-winning wine. Sangria and frozen drinks are also available there. The production process is described as well: Twelve Oaks Vineyard harvests the grapes by hand, processes them on-site, and makes wine there. This links the tasting room experience with specific information about wine production, though tasting and production are not the same experience.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

When looking for a vacation rental, you can first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: boating and fishing at Carlyle Lake, birdwatching, hiking trails, or history and wine. These priorities give your trip planning direction and help you compare accommodation options with the activities you have in mind. For a trip focused more on hiking, the trails in Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area and the Cherokee Trail are particularly useful points of reference; those interested in the county’s history will find two different subjects at the cemetery and the museum.
