Christian County combines impressive insights into regional history with prairie, lakes, and a variety of trails. Anyone planning a trip centered on culture, nature, and active days will find plenty of options here. When choosing your vacation rental, it is worth deciding on your personal priorities: Would you like to explore museums and historic sites, spend time outdoors, or combine different interests?

History to Discover

The original Christian County Courthouse stands at the Christian County Historical Society Museum. Abraham Lincoln worked there as a lawyer twice a year for twelve years. The museum also includes a log cabin from the 1820s. The Christian County Coal Mine Museum focuses on a different aspect of history. It features an exhibition covering a century of coal mining through the closure of Peabody Mine No. 10 in 1995. Mining artifacts, maps showing the locations of coal deposits and mines, and a recreated mine shaft with miner figures make this topic vivid.

Pana also offers several opportunities for exploring cultural history. Two architectural walking tours are available with printable maps. Pana’s Old Railroad Switch Tower is the surviving structure at the site where four railroad lines converged. Admission to the Pana History Museum is free; it is open to the public by appointment. The Roseland Theatre adds to the cultural offerings with its Art Moderne architecture. The single-screen cinema opened in 1941 and continues to show first-run films on its large screen.

Prairie, Water, and Trails

Anderson Prairie Land and Water Reserve preserves high-quality prairie remnants ranging from wet mesic to dry mesic. Anderson Prairie Wildlife Park contains 25 acres of remnants of Illinois’s original tallgrass prairie. In the butterfly house, you can observe around 25 butterfly species throughout their entire life cycles. The Native Illinois Tallgrass Butterfly House is open from June through September.

For active days, the 15-mile-long Lincoln Prairie Trail is an excellent choice. It follows a former railroad corridor through Christian County between Pana and Taylorville, providing a continuous connection for pedestrians, cyclists, and people using wheeled mobility aids. Kitchell Park combines a walking path with a disc golf course. Its round Chautauqua pavilion dates from 1911; the park is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Water-based activities can also be part of your travel plans. Sangchris Lake State Park offers fishing, boating, and camping. Access areas 2 and 3 have ADA-compliant, accessible fishing piers. Pana Lake has a public boat launch at the lower lake; American channel catfish and muskellunge are also stocked there annually from IDNR hatcheries. Manners Park includes a seven-acre pond, a swimming pool, a disc golf course, and a historic auditorium.

Those interested in culture can combine museums, historic buildings, and architectural walking tours with a visit to the cinema. If you prefer spending time outdoors, consider the Lincoln Prairie Trail, the prairie areas, or the activities available on the water. For trips involving a range of interests, active outings, nature observations, and historic sightseeing can be alternated.

The Pana Tri-County Fair is also part of the region’s character. It was first held in 1885 and takes place annually for six days starting on the Wednesday before Labor Day. Coal Creek Pioneer Village offers tours showing how pioneers lived and worked. This allows you to plan your trip according to your personal pace and interests before choosing suitable accommodation for your stay.
