Discover Kamiah: River, Culture and History
Accommodation in Kamiah
Kamiah combines a riverside experience, vibrant culture and the history of the Nez Perce Nimiipuu. Riverfront Park is located along the Clearwater Scenic Byway on Highway 12, directly beside the Clearwater River. Those planning a trip with different focal points will find opportunities here for days by the water, historical discoveries, public art and distinctive local traditions.
Riverfront Park and activities on the Clearwater River
Riverfront Park is a natural starting point for a varied day plan. From the park, visitors can take the Nature Trail upstream. There is also an interpretive display about the Lewis and Clark Long Camp next to the bridge. The park has a covered area and a pavilion that can be reserved. Play equipment and two swings are also available. Those travelling with children can incorporate these options into their day without having to limit their stay to a single experience.
Kamiah also offers recreational activities on the water, including river-rafting excursions, as well as fishing. This allows you to tailor your stay to your personal interests: A day by the river can be the main focus, while another day can leave more room for the area's history and art. On the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway, Kamiah is one of the places with comprehensive services. This is useful guidance when looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home as a base for different vacation interests.
Nez Perce history in and around the town
The Kamiah Historical Society and Museum preserves mammoth bones as well as Nez Perce Nimiipuu artefacts. For a museum visit, note that from Memorial Day through September 30, the museum is open Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by appointment. You can therefore take the opening hours into account when planning. The history of Lewis and Clark provides another historical connection: They camped in the Kamiah Valley for several weeks in spring 1806 while waiting for the snow to melt.
Kamiah was the winter quarters of the Nez Perce. The town was also a place where the Nez Perce fished for steelhead and made “Kamia” ropes. These different facets make the history more than a single attraction; it is a theme that can be explored in different ways at the museum, in the park and at other locations. River Arts Kamiah complements the cultural focus with free classes and open hands-on projects.
Heart of the Monster and public art
Heart of the Monster is a special cultural stop. The site is revered as the creation place of the Nez Perce. An interpretive shelter contains two exhibits and an audio programme. A short path of approximately 0.2 miles leads to the “Heart of the Monster” feature and a small semicircular seating area. An unpaved scenic path can be extended into a 0.5-mile loop hike. This allows you to decide whether to focus on the short route or plan the longer trail option.
Public art is also part of the townscape. Most of it is located on Main Street and its side streets; additional artworks can be found in River Front Park. Those who enjoy incorporating small discoveries into a visit to the town can connect these artworks with the historical themes. Kamiah BBQ Days is a tradition held over Labor Day weekend that has continued for more than 80 years.

When searching for a holiday apartment in Kamiah, you can first consider which rhythm suits your trip. Focusing on Riverfront Park, water activities and fishing favours days on the Clearwater River. Those with a stronger interest in history can include the museum, the Long Camp display and Heart of the Monster in their plans. Public art, River Arts Kamiah and Kamiah BBQ Days add further highlights. The choice of accommodation can therefore be linked to the experiences you want and your personal daily plans, without requiring any particular accommodation features.
