Bingham County combines impressive landscapes with museums, regional history and diverse opportunities for active days. Between lava flows, canyon landscapes, lakes and cultural collections, you can shape your trip in many different ways: with hikes and mountain biking experiences, water activities at the lake or insights into the region’s history. You can also choose your holiday apartment to suit this desired mix of vacation experiences.

Between Lava, Canyons and a Butterfly Conservatory

Wolverine Canyon, located northeast of Blackfoot on Wolverine Canyon Road, offers dispersed camping, snowmobiling, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking. This gives the canyon various options for an active day of travel. Another distinctive landscape feature is Hell's Half Acre, an area with lava flows that is suitable for hiking. Those looking for an unusual natural setting will find a clear contrast here to Blackfoot’s aquatic and park facilities.

The Butterfly Haven, a butterfly conservatory, is located in Pingree. This destination complements the landscape experiences with a completely different natural environment. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between open lava fields, canyon activities and a butterfly conservatory without limiting your vacation to just one type of experience.

Museums, Architecture and Regional History

The Idaho Potato Museum is housed in the former Oregon Short Line Railroad Depot from 1913. The exhibits cover the history of the potato, its cultivation and harvesting, nutrition, facts and educational information about potatoes. The Potato Station Café also adds to the regional character: potatoes are baked, fried, made into cupcakes, coated with chocolate or served as bread there.

The Bingham County Historical Society Museum also conveys history through its architecture. The 15 rooms, the large white columns on the veranda and the conservatory reflect a Southern architectural style corresponding to the architecture of Tennessee, the Browns’ home state. The exhibits include Native American artifacts, contemporary clothing, furnishings from bygone eras, musical instruments, military uniforms, a doll collection and numerous historical photographs.

For another historical perspective, you can include Fort Hall in your plans. The Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Museum is located there along the Oregon Trail. It presents traditional clothing and handicrafts as well as changes in the lives of Native Americans after the arrival of outsiders. During the summer months, a living bison from the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes’ bison herd can also be viewed next to the museum. The historic Kirkpatrick Cabin in the Snake River Historical Homestead is also part of the region’s history; it is considered the oldest surviving cabin in Bingham County.

Greenbelt, Lake and Leisure Activities

The Greater Blackfoot Area Greenbelt is a paved multi-use trail measuring 6.5 miles in length. Viewpoints, seating and informative signs provide additional points of orientation along the trail. At Jensen Grove Park, you will find picnic tables, restrooms, playground equipment, disc golf, open spaces, an amphitheater, basketball courts and parking. The park also has a fully equipped skate park and borders Jensen’s Lake, which has a beach.

Jensen Grove Lake is Blackfoot’s main summer recreation center for boating, water skiing, swimming and picnicking. You can also walk and jog along the Greenbelt. The Rose Pond Area has an archery range. Tee times at Blackfoot Golf Course can be booked online around the clock. The Eastern Idaho State Fair features exciting rides and food vendors, adding another highlight to an eventful stay.
