Spalding combines expansive parks, varied trails and the history of Griffin-Spalding into a destination offering many different ideas for day trips. Families can relax by the water, enjoy sports facilities or explore historic sites. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth deciding on your preferred travel style first: Should the focus be on exercise and nature, on culture, or on a mix of active and more relaxed experiences?

Parks, Trails and Water Activities

Dundee Lake Park offers a 28-acre fishing lake. Shore fishing and small boats without petrol engines are permitted there. Those looking for an outing with a clear sporting focus will find a six-foot half-pipe, several quarter-pipes, bank-to-bank elements, an event fun box and various grind rails at Grind Skate Park. The facility is open to BMX bikes, inline skates, scooters and roller skates.

Cyclists can also choose between different routes. The 1.1-mile Green Loop in Quarry’s Edge Park is suitable for beginners and family outings. The 3.1-mile Blue Loop, on the other hand, is designed for experienced cyclists. In addition, there are cleared areas at the bottom and on top of the quarry, offering a first glimpse into the interior of Quarry’s Edge Park.

Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park covers 164 acres and includes a three-acre lake, seven soccer fields and five baseball fields. For walks, there is a paved 1.25-mile loop and a 5K cross-country trail. Ernie’s Trail is considered a nature-rich route with diverse flora and fauna and is suitable for peaceful recreation as well as educational purposes. The park also hosts tournaments, events and classes for all age groups throughout the year.

Additional trails can be found at Thomaston Mills Village Park, with its quarter-mile paved walkway, and at Airport Road Park, with its 0.5-mile rubberized walkway. The latter also has a large play structure for children aged 2 to 12 and an accessible playground area. Julian Jones Park in Orchard Hill has two playgrounds, two walkways, a baseball practice field, five picnic pavilions and restrooms. The 34-acre site of Thomaston Mills Village Park was formerly owned by a mill.

History and Culture in Griffin-Spalding

Those wishing to explore the region’s past can include Griffin as an important cultural reference point in their plans. The Griffin Museum displays artefacts and memorabilia from Griffin dating back to the mid-19th century. Its themes range from the Dixie Highway and the development of the railway to aviation pioneers, agricultural innovations, textile manufacturing and Doc Holliday.

Historic buildings include the Greek Revival-style Bailey Tebault House, built between 1859 and 1862 and now home to the Griffin Spalding Historical Society, as well as the Spalding County Courthouse. It is one of only 15 surviving antebellum courthouses in Georgia and is considered a rare example of the Italianate style from the time it was built in 1859. Griffin’s Rosenwald School, built in 1929, was established during the era of racial segregation in the southern United States. St. George’s Episcopal Church has a Gothic Revival-style church building constructed in 1869.

The Our Legacy Museum presents historical and cultural experiences of Griffin-Spalding’s African American community. Heritage Park includes a Rosenwald school, an Equalization School, a gymnasium and a community garden. The Griffin Opera House, built in the 19th century, was renovated to highlight its historic and representative character. Oak Hill Cemetery was part of Griffin’s original city plan and is the burial place of many historical figures connected to Spalding County.

Family Activities and Trip Planning

Spalding County Aquatic Center has a 25-yard competition pool with eight lanes and a 25-yard warm-water pool with four lanes and ramp access. Other events provide additional reasons to visit: The annual June Jam Beach Party is free and family-friendly, featuring live music, food vendors and more than 100 tons of sand. Feast on East is an annual autumn gathering with communal outdoor dining and local music on East Solomon Street. The festival honouring Doc Holliday includes historical reenactments, live entertainment and a BBQ competition.

Before booking, prioritise the desired focus of your trip: trails and parks, water activities, sports, family activities or history. This allows you to choose a holiday apartment in Spalding that suits your personal daily plans without limiting yourself to just one type of experience.
