Muscogee offers a remarkable mix of river landscapes, nature experiences and cultural history. The opportunities described range from active days at Lake Oliver and the Chattahoochee River to museums, historic theaters and ways to explore the region’s history. Anyone looking for a vacation rental in Muscogee can therefore first consider whether the trip should focus more on outdoor experiences, Columbus’ cultural offerings or a combination of both.

Nature by the Water and Active Days

The Standing Boy Trails are located on a 1,580-acre property along the shores of Lake Oliver in Muscogee County. The trail system offers opportunities for hiking, running, cycling and wildlife observation. A park pass is required to visit; the trail system may be closed after heavy rainfall. These details should be included in your daily planning if you want to consciously divide your time between nature and the city itinerary.

Another notable landscape experience is the Chattahoochee RiverWalk in Columbus. The linear footpath is 22 miles long. Parking is available near each listed access point. Those who want to experience the river from a more active perspective can take kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and fly-fishing lessons at Whitewater Express. Visitors can also ride a zip line there across the Chattahoochee River to Alabama and back to Georgia.

The Columbus Botanical Garden also offers a more tranquil accent. The 36-acre garden includes the Joann Holt Walking Trail as well as display gardens featuring native and regional plant species. Tours of the historic 1890s Adams Farmhouse are offered during the week. The listed hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; last admission is at 4:00 p.m.

Columbus as a Cultural Destination

Many of the cultural experiences are located in Columbus. The Columbus Collective Museums comprise eight museums in a restored warehouse and exhibition building belonging to a tile and marble company that was originally built in 1946. At the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, formal and informal programs on the region’s ecology and natural history are combined with interactive natural history exhibits and living collections of regional animals.

For those interested in history, the National Civil War Naval Museum offers several different perspectives. On display are the CSS Jackson and the salvaged wreck of the CSS Chattahoochee. They are joined by a reconstruction of the USS Hartford and replicas of the towers of the USS Monitor and the CSS Albemarle. The museum also offers the self-guided “Stroll the Decks” tour, featuring an introduction by a museum interpreter, as well as the guided “African-Americans & Civil War Navies” tour. Year-round offerings also include living-history programs, guided tours, cannon firings, weapons demonstrations and special history projects.

The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center is dedicated to the American infantry soldier and preserves a significant collection of military artifacts. Its period galleries document the infantry’s involvement in conflicts since the nation’s founding. The “The Last 100 Yards” exhibit presents more than 240 years of infantry history in an immersive way. The 155-acre campus also includes a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and a memorial to the Global War on Terrorism.

History, Theater and Regional Perspectives

Historic Columbus offers tours covering more than 150 years of city history, as well as a self-guided driving tour along the Black Heritage Trail. The Liberty Theatre opened in 1925 and, during the Jim Crow era, was the only theater in Columbus that offered non-segregated events. The Historic Liberty Theatre & Cultural Arts Center is temporarily closed for renovations. The Ma Rainey House in Columbus is also closed for renovations until further notice. The Ma Rainey House and Blues Museum is dedicated to the life and career of Ma Rainey, as well as the history and influences of the blues tradition in the lower Chattahoochee River Valley.

The Springer Opera House is designated a National Historic Landmark and opened in 1871. Historical tours with museum guides are available by appointment; late-night ghost tours are also offered. The theater produces fourteen live performances per season. For visitors who want to add technology and space exploration to their trip, Columbus State University’s Coca-Cola Space Science Center houses the largest collection of NASA space shuttle artifacts in Georgia. Visitors can take a virtual trip to the International Space Station and use flight simulators there.

The Right Base for Planning Your Trip

When choosing your vacation rental, you can use your preferred daily structure as a starting point: nature days lead to the Standing Boy Trails, the Botanical Garden or the RiverWalk, while museums, historical tours and theater experiences shape the cultural part of the trip. For arrival, Columbus Metropolitan Airport is approximately a 15-minute drive from downtown Columbus; Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about an hour and a half away.

For city experiences, continue your orientation toward Columbus. Other destinations to consider: Union, Fayette, Haralson County, Dawson County, Stewart County, Jeff Davis County, Clayton.
