Meriwether County can be explored in several ways: along the Upper Flint River, along the Pine Mountain ridge, at historic sites and at regional festivals. This creates a diverse mix of nature, activity, culture and special experiences for your trip planning. Depending on whether you want to focus on water, long trails, architecture or local traditions, you can tailor your search for a vacation rental around different priorities.

River, Lake and Trails through the Landscape

The Upper Flint River flows through Meriwether County for approximately 28 miles. Along the river, there are rare plant and animal species as well as expansive views of mountain ranges. The county section of the Flint River Water Trail has four main access and exit points. At the public boat ramp at the Highway 18 Bridge, you can start upstream or downstream.

The Pine Mountain Trail is ideal for hiking. The footpath is 23 miles long and runs along the Pine Mountain ridge. The two access points in Meriwether County are located at the WJSP TV Tower on Highway 85 and at the Rocky Point parking area on Highway 190. Those who want to combine water activities with time outdoors will find opportunities for picnicking, boating, fishing and camping at 144-acre Lake Meriwether near Woodbury. The Meriwether-Pike County Scenic Byway also offers its own way to explore the region: The 55-mile loop can be started at any point.

Historic Sites in Greenville and Warm Springs

In Greenville, some of the travel experience centers on architecture and history. The Meriwether County Courthouse was completed in 1904 and designed in the Neoclassical Revival style. The Greenville’s Historic Homes Tour is self-guided and includes 26 sites with different architectural styles; its history dates back to the 1830s. The Greenville Presbyterian Church was built around 1836 and is considered a rare rural example of a Presbyterian church in Georgia.

Another notable attraction is the Red Oak Covered Bridge. It was built in the 1840s by Horace King and is considered Georgia’s oldest and longest wooden covered bridge. At the Little White House State Historic Site, the museum displays the Unfinished Portrait as well as, among other things, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1938 Ford convertible with hand controls. The site is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Roosevelt Warm Springs was founded by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1927 as a comprehensive rehabilitation center.

The regional history of the trails is also part of the county’s character. Flat Shoals on the Flint River is part of the Oakfuskee Trail, which is described as a major trade route of the Creek. In Warm Springs, Warm Springs Winery adds a cultural element to the visit with Muscadine wines made from locally grown grapes and a tasting room.

Festivals and Special Experiences

Local events provide additional reasons to visit. Gay’s Cotton Pickin’ Days takes place twice a year, in spring and fall, and celebrates art, antiques and the agricultural heritage. Peaches in the Pines takes place on the second Saturday in June at Lake Meriwether Park in Woodbury. It is an arts and crafts festival with live entertainment, homemade products and activities for children.

For a playful way to discover Warm Springs, there is the Warm Springs Marvelous GeoQuest, a geocaching route inspired by Marvel Comics. You can also save Warm Springs with its aforementioned cultural, wine and outdoor experiences, as well as Gay with Cotton Pickin’ Days, as separate search options.

Choosing the Right Area for Your Vacation Rental

When searching for a vacation rental, it helps to first determine the focus of your trip. For days by the water, the Flint River Water Trail and Lake Meriwether can serve as reference points; for a longer hike, the Pine Mountain Trail offers a clearly defined destination. If you prefer historic buildings and local history, Greenville, the Historic Homes Tour, the Courthouse and the Red Oak Covered Bridge can guide your further planning. Warm Springs combines several distinct experiences, while Woodbury offers a different emphasis with Lake Meriwether and the Peaches in the Pines festival. This allows you to choose the location of your accommodation based on the discoveries you actually want to make.

The following destinations are also available for further destination searches: Liberty County, Wayne County, Butts, Stewart County, Washington County and Macon County.
