Discover Gray: Culture, Historic Routes, and Golf
Accommodation in Gray
Gray combines engaging local history with excursions along historic routes, nature experiences, and a golf course open year-round. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Gray can already take their preferred travel rhythm into account when choosing a location: Museums and historic buildings are the main focus, while the Ocmulgee-Piedmont Scenic Byway leads to landscapes and historic sites. In addition, the Lake Jonesco Golf Course offers an option for days when sports are the priority.
Culture and History in Gray
A good place to start is the Jones County Education Museum at the W.E. Knox Civic Center, 161 West Clinton Street, Gray. The museum presents three eras of school classrooms: from early one-room schoolhouses to classrooms from the late 20th century. This makes educational history tangible not only through dates, but also through different spaces and learning environments.
The renovated Jones County Courthouse in Gray was built in 1905 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Main Street Station also has historic roots. The former ambulance building at the corner of Highway 129 and Atlanta Road was restored in 2015 and returned to its original 1950s style. Today, it houses the Gray Welcome Center. The Otis Redding Memorial was unveiled directly next to it in 2016; an interactive panel offers a selection of songs by Otis Redding.
The former Jones County High School building was designed by architect Ellamae League (1899–1991) and built in 1936. It was converted into the Jones County Civic Center, which now houses the Jones County Auditorium and additional spaces for public and community purposes. The history of education also includes Gray Elementary and High School, a school for Black students in Jones County. Under the direction of James Russell Collins, its curriculum was expanded to cover grades one through twelve.
Routes, Nature, and Historic Sites
The Ocmulgee-Piedmont Scenic Byway begins in downtown Gray on Highway 11. It passes through several communities before reaching Round Oak-Juliette Road and ends at the Ocmulgee River in Juliette. Different themes lie close together along the byway, without prescribing a single itinerary for the day: The Battle of Sunshine Church took place there in 1864 during the American Civil War, and the route passes through the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to many endangered wildlife species. Highway 11 was formerly a trail used by Native Americans.
For longer days of excursions, there are additional independent destinations to consider. The Hitchiti Nature Trail is a four-mile loop trail that follows Little Falling Creek to the Ocmulgee River. Jarrell Plantation includes more than 20 authentic plantation buildings and structures from the 19th and early 20th centuries; its history dates back to 1847. A half-mile historical trail there provides information about two historic farms and more than 100 years of Georgia history.
The Old Clinton Historic District also reflects the region’s historical focus. It contains houses and public buildings from the early 19th century that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Old Clinton War Days is scheduled for the first weekend in May as a reenactment of the occupation of Clinton by Union troops during the American Civil War.
Golf as a Distinct Travel Focus
The public Lake Jonesco Golf Course is an 18-hole golf course and is open year-round. From the back tees, it measures 6,544 yards; three sets of tees accommodate different skill levels. The course also includes a driving range as well as golf club and golf cart rentals. Every quarter, the golf course hosts a Family Day, when children can play golf for free when accompanied by a parent.
The Right Accommodation for Your Trip Planning
A vacation rental in Gray may be a suitable search option if you want to combine historic impressions, the start of the Scenic Byway, and a day of golf in your trip planning. The key consideration is which experiences form the main focus: museums and local history, a route featuring landscapes and Civil War history, or a stay with golf as a distinct part of the itinerary. If you would also like to compare other places, you can include Wadley in your research.
