Jackson County: History, Nature and Special Experiences
Accommodation in Jackson County
Jackson County combines historic sites, river landscapes and diverse excursion destinations to create a trip with a variety of experiences. Here, you can combine a museum visit with a walk, discover regional history or plan active days by the water and on trails. Motorsport, wine and wellness are also among the area’s defining offerings. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred travel style: Should culture, nature or a varied mix of several interests be the main focus?
Nature Experiences by the Water and in the Countryside
At Hurricane Shoals Park, the Hurricane Shoals Nature Trail showcases the rugged beauty of the North Oconee River. The trail is approximately 2 miles long in total. If you like to plan your day around a specific distance, you can take this approximate length into account when choosing your activities. The same park is also home to Heritage Village, with historic buildings that were rescued and relocated there. This allows you to combine the landscape with an insight into earlier architectural and ways of life.
Tubing is also permitted in the rapids at the park. Another historic waterside landscape awaits you at Sell’s Mill Park, where visitors can see rapids, a water wheel and a millrace area, as well as hike along the trails. Those who prefer a quieter outing with visible traces of earlier use will find a different focus here than with tubing.
Crow’s Lake focuses on family fishing and other outdoor agritourism recreational activities. The site has 1K, 5K and 10K cross-country courses open for running and cycling events, as well as horseback-riding trails and an 18-hole disc golf course. Depending on your mood for the day, you can therefore choose between different activities without limiting the trip to a single theme.
History in Museums, Townscapes and Historic Buildings
The Welcome Center is located in the restored Jackson County Historic Courthouse. In Jefferson, the Crawford W. Long Museum commemorates Dr. Long’s discovery of the use of ether as an anesthetic on March 30, 1842. At the museum, you can also explore the Pendergrass General Store. Opened in 1858, the dry-goods store is the only surviving commercial building from the pre-Civil War era in Jefferson.
The Shields-Ethridge Heritage Farm also has a historical focus. It preserves a collection of intact historic buildings at their original sites; the buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The farm is an open-air agricultural museum as well as an educational and interpretive facility in northeast Georgia. In Commerce, the Commercial Historic District is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places and includes more than 100 commercial buildings from the Italianate era. The historic downtown district is lined with trees, easy to explore on foot and includes shops, craft breweries and local restaurants.
The Jackson County Courthouse in Jefferson was built in 1879 with elements of the Neoclassical style. The Commerce Cultural Center, formerly the Historic Presbyterian Church, hosts theatrical performances, concerts and festivals or stage events. The Jefferson Community Theatre enables local residents to participate in theater as actors, members of the stage crew or audience members.
Wine, Wellness and Special Day Plans
For enjoyment-focused days, Chateau Elan offers a tasting with six pours of its signature wines, including sparkling wines, reserve wines and limited releases. The Spa at Chateau Elan offers individual massages, revitalizing skincare, body rituals and treatments for couples. Chateau Elan Golf Club has 45 holes across the Woodlands Course, the Chateau Course and the Executive Par 3. These offerings create different possibilities for planning a trip focused on wine, relaxation or golf.
Events also shape the regional experience. Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta hosts more than 20 events each year, attracting over 400,000 visitors. The Tumbling Waters Society sponsors the annual Art in the Park Festival and the 5K Millrace at Hurricane Shoals Park on the third weekend of September. The grain mill in the park was rebuilt in the 1980s, is fully operational today and grinds cornmeal for the Art in the Park Festival.
