Gordon County in northwest Georgia combines American history with rivers, culture and a wide range of activities. Its location along Interstate 75 makes finding your way on arrival easier. When choosing a holiday rental in Gordon, the main question is therefore which experiences should shape your stay: historic sites, museums and theatres, peaceful paddling trips, cycling trails or days surrounded by nature.

Cherokee History and Historic Sites

One particularly significant place is New Echota. From 1825 to 1835, New Echota was the capital of the Cherokee Nation. At the same time, the site is considered the birthplace of the written Cherokee language and the newspaper Cherokee Phoenix. At New Echota State Historic Site, visitors can see 12 original and reconstructed buildings. Anyone interested in Cherokee history and the development of written communication will find a clear cultural focus for trip planning here.

The history of the Civil War is also present at several sites in Gordon County. Fort Wayne Civil War Historic Site comprises two well-preserved fortifications that were used by Confederate and Union troops during and after the Civil War. Resaca Battlefield Historic Site is associated with the first major battle of the Atlanta Campaign and features a six-mile trail network. Resaca Confederate Cemetery, considered the first Confederate cemetery dedicated in the country, is the final resting place of 451 soldiers who died in the Battle of Resaca.

Rivers, Trails and Outdoor Activities

Gordon County has 47 miles of rivers. The rivers offer opportunities for paddling on calm water; the New Echota Rivers Alliance provides guided paddling trips from March to November. This time restriction is important for trip planning if an organised tour is to be part of the desired stay. There are also cycling trails ranging from easy to moderate. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh culturally focused days against active outdoor activities without limiting your stay to a single type of trip.

The ROCK Garden combines nature with unusual design. More than 50 miniature buildings made from stones, shells, pebbles and other materials are part of the site. The garden covers one acre of flowers and green spaces. A nature trail leads through the forest, where visitors may see native wildlife. For a more relaxing change of pace, the public Fields Ferry Golf Club with 18 holes is another option.

Museums, Music and Regional Discoveries

The Roland Hayes Museum presents photographs, stories, audio recordings, signed programmes, personal letters and musical scores from Roland Hayes’s career. Hayes was the child of formerly enslaved people and became the first African American singer to achieve international recognition. The museum is located in the Harris Arts Center, which also houses the Ratner Theater, art galleries and The Art Market Gift Shop. Changing exhibitions, classes and cultural performances complement the offerings.

In Calhoun, the restored GEM Theatre has 461 seats. Oakleigh is also located there, a carefully restored antebellum mansion that houses the Gordon County Historical Society. Tours of Oakleigh are available by appointment. The “The General” exhibit is 16 feet long and features a locomotive, a wooden tender, railway cars and figures. It is located in the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office.

Plan Your Trip at Your Own Pace

Further impressions are provided by the Farmers’ Market in Downtown Calhoun, with food from local vendors, fresh produce, handcrafted goods and seasonal products, as well as Payne Farm & Produce, offering locally grown fruit and vegetables that visitors can pick themselves. Copper Creek Farm hosts a sunflower festival every summer. Sunrise Planetarium offers group visits that combine an exploration of astronomy with a ride on a narrow-gauge railway. The Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library presents exhibitions on the region’s history and offers educational programmes. The Northwest Georgia Fair takes place every year at Cherokee Capital Fairgrounds.

When searching for a holiday rental in Gordon, you can therefore use your preferred daily rhythm as your starting point: culture and history, rivers and paddling, cycling or a combination of several interests. For further orientation within the selection of destinations, you can also find Calhoun and Fairmount here.
