Colquitt County
Accommodation in Colquitt County
Colquitt County in southern Georgia combines nature experiences, cultural history and agriculturally shaped landscapes. Reed Bingham State Park, the attractions around Moultrie and the Georgia Grown Trail 37 offer different possibilities for a trip: You can plan days by the water and on trails, explore historic sites or visit agricultural destinations. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worthwhile to first determine your preferred focus.
Nature and Trails in Reed Bingham State Park
One of the county’s distinctive natural areas is Reed Bingham State Park, with a 375-acre lake. Canoes and kayaks can be rented there. Eight trails totaling seven miles are open to hikers and cyclists from sunrise to sunset. This allows you to combine time by the water with exercise without having to commit to just one trail length.
The wildlife and plant life also give the park its distinctive character. Opportunities for observing wildlife include gopher tortoises, yellow-bellied slider turtles, indigo snakes, bald eagles and American alligators. Along the Coastal Plain Nature Trail, almost 80 percent of the Coastal Plain’s plant community is represented. The park is also less than six miles from Interstate 75, which can be taken into account when making general arrival plans.
City History and Culture Around Moultrie
Those who want to discover history as well as nature will find an important starting point in the Moultrie Commercial Historic District. The district was historically significant as a commercial center for the city of Moultrie and Colquitt County and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 3, 1994. The Museum of Colquitt County History focuses on early life in the county and displays artifacts of the Indigenous peoples of America, memorabilia from the American Civil War and a permanent exhibition on the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame.
A particularly unusual historical stop is the Old Colquitt County Jail. Built in 1915, the building was constructed in the Gothic Revival style; the original gallows is still located on the third floor. The Arts Center uses the former Moultrie High School building and stages theater productions there throughout the year featuring local talent. Classes in dance, music and art are also offered. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Active Days and Short Distances
For longer walks, bike rides or jogging routes, Tom White Linear Park offers 7.2 miles of trails stretching from downtown Moultrie to the municipal airport. Trail signage is available in English and Spanish. Those looking for a shorter route will find a 0.25-mile walking path and a shaded playground at Main Street Park. These different trail lengths help you combine active and more relaxed parts of the day without reducing the character of the county to a single attraction.
Additional sports facilities are also part of the region’s recreational offerings: Moose Moss Diving Facility has a ten-meter tower and a heated diving pool, Memorial Pool is a heated competition pool with ten lanes, and the Lynda Baxter Moseley Tennis Complex includes six lighted tennis courts. The Moose Moss Aquatic Center in Moultrie also became a training site for six Olympic teams.
Experience Agriculture and Choose Suitable Accommodation
The surrounding area is characterized by Georgia’s productive agricultural land. C&J Berry Farms offers seasonal pick-your-own blueberries near Moultrie. Ochlockonee Ridge Farms offers pick-your-own strawberries as well as already-picked strawberries there. The Georgia Grown Trail 37 runs through Colquitt County and connects agriculture-related tourism destinations such as pick-your-own farms, dairies, vineyards and wineries.
When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home, you can therefore consider whether nature trails and the lake, cultural discoveries, sports facilities or agricultural excursions should be the focus of your trip. Accommodation connected to a suitable starting point makes personal day planning easier without forcing you to fit all experiences into a rigid schedule. This leaves room for an active day in the state park, a museum or theater visit and a seasonal discovery at a farm.
