Hobe Sound Beach has white sand and blue water. Travelers who want to combine wildlife observation, beach days, and active excursions when planning their trip can explore a variety of landscapes: the Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge encompasses undeveloped beach and mangroves along the Indian River Lagoon, while the Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve consists almost entirely of rare scrub pine habitat.

Experience Nature at the Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge

The Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge encompasses the largest continuous stretch of undeveloped beach in southeastern Florida. At the same time, it is considered one of the most productive sea turtle nesting areas in the southeastern United States. The preserve is also home to nearly 40 species classified as endangered, threatened, or species of special concern. Along the Indian River Lagoon, almost 10 miles of mangrove stands are part of this natural area.

For orientation on site, the headquarters and visitor center are located on U.S. Federal Highway 1, two miles south of Bridge Road (State Road 708) in Hobe Sound. A nature trail more than half a mile long leads through scrub pine habitat and tropical hardwood forest to a beach on the Indian River Lagoon. This route offers a specific opportunity to experience different landscapes in a single nature outing. The Hobe Sound Nature Center complements the offerings with educational programs, including turtle walks.

Sand Dunes, Wetlands, and Rare Habitats

Smaller preserves also demonstrate how diverse Hobe Sound's landscape is. Kitching Creek Preserve is a 51-acre natural area. Native wildlife uses this habitat, including alligators, otters, songbirds, birds of prey, and various wading bird species. Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve covers 28 acres and consists almost entirely of rare scrub pine habitat. It is located on an ancient sand dune. Travelers who consciously want to experience different types of nature during their stay can consider these two areas as separate focuses of their trip planning.

River, History, and Active Excursions

Jonathan Dickinson State Park opens up another area for nature and outdoor experiences. The park encompasses 16 different natural communities, including coastal sandhills, upland lakes, and scrub forests. The Loxahatchee River flows through it, Florida's first federally designated “Wild and Scenic River.” Boating, canoeing, and kayaking are possible on the river. There are also paved and unpaved mountain biking trails.

The park's historical side includes ranger-led tours throughout the year through Trapper Nelson's 1930s pioneer homestead. This makes it possible to complement an active day on the water or by bike with an insight into the region's history. For families with different interests, this change between nature, activity, and history can make trip planning easier without every day having to follow the same pattern.

Beach, Murals, and the Right Accommodation

Hobe Sound Beach complements the nature experiences mentioned above: white sand and blue water shape the beach experience here. Hobe Sound is also home to 17 large-scale murals that form part of the townscape. They were created by 40 artists and more than 100 local volunteers. Those who want to include a cultural walk in addition to nature excursions will find another distinct highlight here.

When looking for a vacation apartment or vacation home in Hobe Sound, the type of trip you want can be decisive. Wildlife observation, the beach, water activities, mountain biking trails, ranger-led tours, and murals represent different possible daily itineraries. Therefore, first decide whether the trip should be shaped primarily by nature preserves, the beach, activities on the water, or a mix of nature and culture.

For additional destinations to help with your own planning, you can also compare Port Mayaca, Stuart, Indiantown, Palm City, and Jensen Beach.
