Hernando: Nature, History and Water Experiences
Accommodation in Hernando
Hernando combines unspoiled landscapes, a rich regional history and experiences on the water. Anyone planning a trip with nature observation, active days and cultural discoveries will find various ways to shape their stay here. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is worth defining your own priorities first: Should the holiday focus primarily on cycling and hiking, historic sites, water activities or special excursions?
Landscapes Between River, Marsh and Sandhills
One defining natural area is the Weekiwachee Wildlife Management Area. It covers more than 2,800 acres in Hernando County and combines dense hardwood swamps, freshwater and saltwater marshes, and pine-covered sandhills. This mix gives the landscape a varied character and offers different opportunities to explore the surroundings consciously. Fishing is permitted in the area year-round.
The Withlacoochee River also offers a unique perspective on the region: it winds for 13 miles through the Withlacoochee State Forest. The state forest also offers miles of hiking trails. Those who enjoy alternating between peaceful moments in nature and longer active days when planning a trip can consider these two offerings separately or as different focal points.
Cycling, Paddling and Experiences on the Water
For cycling travelers, the Withlacoochee State Trail is particularly noteworthy. The paved rail trail is 46 miles long, has numerous access points and runs through Citrus, Hernando and Pasco Counties. Its length makes it worthwhile to consider the planned route and preferred daily rhythm when choosing a holiday location, without having to complete the entire trail in one day.
On the water, options range from paddling to collecting scallops. Visitors can collect scallops in the Nature Coast Aquatic Preserve. Bayport Park and Linda Pedersen Park offer designated boat launches for kayaks and canoes, as well as parking, restrooms and picnic areas. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park offers a river cruise. Underwater mermaid shows take place there daily; Buccaneer Bay is Florida’s only spring-fed water park.
Other unusual leisure ideas complement the nature program. Lead Foot City in Brooksville covers 60 acres and offers, among other things, a 1/8-mile drag racing track, burnouts, drift karts, car shows and live music. The Olympus Disc Golf Course is an 18-hole, championship-level course in a reclaimed limestone quarry.
Historic Sites and Regional Culture
Hernando can also be explored through its buildings and institutions. The Richloam General Store was founded by Sidney Brinson on June 28, 1922, and served the Richloam community as an express office, post office and general store until January 31, 1936. The 1885 Train Depot has stood in the same location since it was built. Both examples give historic functions a tangible face.
The Hernando Historical Museum Association comprises three museums: the May-Stringer House, the 1885 Train Depot and the Countryman One Room Schoolhouse. The May-Stringer House is a four-story Victorian-era house with seven gables and 14 rooms. Chinsegut Hill Historic Site was built in 1845; its mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hernando County Fine Arts Council was founded in 1987 and is also part of the destination’s cultural orientation.
The region’s working and everyday history is also visible. At Boyett’s Grove, visitors can watch a restored washing and packing machine from the 1940s process citrus fruit. Boyett’s Grove also grows a wide variety of commercially cultivated citrus fruits in Hernando County. The Nature Coast Botanical Gardens offer environmental programs. On cruises operated by Marina Rose Cruises, meals as well as beer, wine, cocktails and other drinks from a bar are offered on board.
Choose the Right Starting Point
For a holiday apartment in Hernando, the desired mix of activities can provide a useful structure for the search. Those who want to focus on the Withlacoochee State Trail or the hiking trails will plan differently from travelers who want to combine underwater shows, historic buildings, paddling launches or a cruise with Marina Rose Cruises.
For your further choice of location, you can also include Spring Hill, Ridge Manor, Brooksville, Weeki Wachee, Timber Pines and Hernando Beach in your travel plans.
