Perdido Key is a barrier island with gently curving white-sand dunes and calm Gulf waters along its southern side. Wetlands and estuaries with diverse wildlife lie to the north. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a stay by the water will therefore find a range of travel ideas here: beach days, nature experiences, bike tours, paddling excursions and cultural impressions can be combined as focal points of your own trip planning.

Dunes, Beach and Protected Wildlife

Perdido Key State Park is home to the Perdido Key beach mouse, nesting shorebirds and nesting sea turtles. The Perdido Key beach mouse lives in the coastal dunes along the island and is protected as an endangered species under the US Endangered Species Act. The eastern end of Perdido Key is surrounded by the 34,000-acre Fort Pickens State Park Aquatic Preserve.

Perdido Key has public beach access points. A beach stay can be planned particularly clearly at Johnson Beach: Johnson Beach is a designated recreational area in Perdido Key within the Gulf Islands National Seashore. There are lifeguards, facilities and a parking lot. Seven accessible boardwalks, a pavilion and a 0.5-mile bike and walking path are also part of the amenities. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether the focus of the trip should be more on the beach and walks or on other activities in the surrounding area.

Discover Perdido Key by Bike and on Foot

The Perdido Key Multi Use Path is a 6.5-mile bike route from the Theo Baars Bridge to the Florida–Alabama border. The route passes through Perdido Key State Park and is a practical way to explore the island by bike. After continuing for about 1.5 miles to the turnaround point, visitors can reach the multi-use path at Johnson Beach Road.

A shorter alternative is the Perdido Key Bike Loop. The 4.3-mile route offers views of the Gulf Coast and leads to a dog park and a kayak launch. This allows you to choose between a longer bike route across the island and a shorter loop with additional stopping points when planning your trip. The different route lengths help make your stay varied without giving every activity the same character.

Old River, Kayaking and Small Sand Islands

On the northern side of Perdido Key, a canoe and kayak launch provides access to Old River. Another public kayak launch on River Road leads to the small islands in the coastal waters of Perdido Key. These islands are sandy, partly covered with vegetation and characterized by white-sand beaches; they are suitable paddling destinations. Old River contains seagrass meadows that can be explored and photographed and used for snorkeling and fishing.

The Perdido Key Snorkeling Reef is also located directly offshore from Perdido Key Beach Access #1. When choosing your accommodation, it may therefore make sense to first determine your preferred water activities: beach access, bike trail, kayak launch or snorkeling each sets a different focus for planning the day. Entertainer Fishing Charters offers walk-on and privately booked fishing trips; Entertainer Charters, LLC has provided visitors in Pensacola with access to fishing charters in the region since 1988.

Coastal Culture on the Florida–Alabama Border

Perdido Key can also be combined with a cultural experience. Flora-Bama Lounge & Package is a cultural landmark of the Gulf Coast on the border between Alabama and Florida. There is live music there 365 days a year. Those who would like to experience music and a distinctive Gulf Coast location in addition to nature and water sports can include this aspect in their trip planning.

Other places to research are West Pensacola, Gulf Breeze, Pensacola, Goulding, Brent and Myrtle Grove.
