Discover Mims: Nature, Waterways, and Culture
Accommodation in Mims
Mims combines diverse landscapes, waterways, and distinctive cultural sites. Those looking for a vacation rental or holiday home as a base can combine different travel ideas here: cycling, fishing, boating, observing nature, and visiting the White Sands Buddhist Center. The individual offerings represent different ways to experience Mims and help you determine the focus of your trip.
Natural Areas with Their Own Character
The Indian Mound Station Sanctuary features a diverse landscape of scrubland, pine flatwoods, swampy depressions, and forested wetlands. The protected area also includes a Native American burial mound complex. Nature enthusiasts can incorporate both the landscape and its history into their travel plans here without having to consider the two aspects separately.
Another distinctive landscape is the North Buck Lake Scrub Sanctuary. It covers 181 acres of woodland and wetlands and borders the 9,000-acre Buck Lake Conservation Area. This area is managed by the St. Johns River Water Management District. The different sizes and landscape types make it clear that Mims offers not only individual destinations but also extensive natural areas. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether to focus your vacation primarily on nature experiences or on a combination of nature with water-based and cultural activities.
Cycling, Fishing, and Ways to Explore the Water
For a cycling tour, the East Central Regional Rail Trail can be noted as a separate travel option. The trail begins at La Grange Road in Titusville and ends at the border with Volusia County.
Anglers will also find various opportunities. Six Mile Creek offers fishing from the shore or from a boat. Sport fishing is also possible from the shore or from a boat at Hatbill Park. On weekends, up to five basic campsites are available there by permit only. This information is particularly useful for travelers planning a stay with water-based activities and wanting to distinguish precisely between the available types of accommodation.
The Mims Launch Ramp provides a natural dirt ramp for non-motorized boats on the Indian River. From there, there is access to the Intracoastal Channel, which leads to the Haulover Canal, the Marsh Bay Area, and the Dummits Cove Area. Six Mile Creek, on the other hand, has a single-lane motorboat ramp. Access to the St. Johns River is possible there via Little Salt Lake, Salt Lake, Loughman Lake, and Clark Lake. This allows you to choose among the waterways based on the type of boat and the desired water area.
Cultural and Spiritual Experiences
The White Sands Buddhist Center features intricately carved artworks and three of Florida’s largest granite Buddha statues. Tours are available by request and should be arranged before arrival. The center also offers meditation sessions in English and Vietnamese every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you would like to include this visit in your plans, coordinating in advance is an important part of preparing for your trip.
The Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park is located on the original homesite of the Moores and honors their legacy and their sacrifices in the fight for equality. Together with the White Sands Buddhist Center, this site adds historical and social themes to the overall travel experience.
