Lawtey combines railroad history with the landscape of the Raiford Wildlife Management Area. The arrival of the Florida Railroad in the 1850s contributed to the town’s growth; a railroad depot was established in Lawtey. You can therefore plan your trip to Lawtey around either the town’s history or nature and outdoor activities.

Railroads, Churches, and Agriculture

Old railroad structures and local landmarks recall Lawtey’s past as an important transportation hub. A black-and-white photograph of Main Street from around 1900 also shows a railroad depot. The Old Train Depot is now used as a municipal administration building.

The founding dates of local churches also provide concrete historical markers: Evergreen Baptist Church in Lawtey was founded in 1887, Lawtey Baptist Church in 1905, Lawtey Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1916, and Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church in 1928. The dates span 1887 to 1928, encompassing several decades of local community life.

Lawtey also developed into a center for trade and commerce. Cotton and citrus fruits were important to the economy; the area’s agricultural history also includes tomatoes, peanuts, and potatoes. These themes complement the railroad history with a look at the work and produce that helped shape the town.

The Lawtey-Peetsville Community Day was once an annual celebration, but it has not taken place since 2022. A report from September 2024 lists fall and spring dates for a church’s community “Love Lawtey” events. It describes free meals for 100 to 130 people, live music, games, and giveaways. If these events are important to your trip, check the current dates in advance.

Lake Sampson lies south of Lawtey. It offers opportunities for outdoor activities, including boating and fishing. So, alongside the area’s historical focus, water activities are another possible emphasis for your trip.
