New Castle County combines expansive parklands, historic sites, and diverse trails into a destination offering many different ideas for day trips. Those who want to combine nature experiences with culture will find both longer routes through protected landscapes and specific insights into Delaware’s history. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worth first determining your preferred focus: active days in parks, historical discoveries, or a mixture of both.

Parks and Trails for Active Days

The New Castle County park system includes 251 parks with a total of nearly 6,000 acres of parkland. One particularly distinctive example is the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail in Brandywine Hundred. More than 1,200 acres of protected natural areas are located there. The trail also has a 10-mile paved section connected to 19 miles of trails in seven parks. Recreational offerings along the trail also include the Brandywine Zoo. This creates a wide range of options for trip planning: You can select individual trail sections or focus your stay more strongly on connected outdoor experiences.

The Brandywine Valley unit also offers a variety of landscape impressions. More than 23 miles of recreational trails lead through an area preserving over 1,300 acres of agricultural fields, pastureland, wooded hills, and streams. Smaller parking areas throughout the Brandywine Valley area provide access to numerous hiking, cycling, and horseback-riding trails. For families with different interests, this landscape can therefore provide an interesting basis for flexible daily planning, without every activity having to be of the same nature.

White Clay Creek State Park has a 4-mile loop trail. It begins in Delaware and leads into Pennsylvania. This cross-border route makes the trail a special example of how nature experiences and regional orientation can be combined. At the Carousel Park Equestrian Center, the grounds extend over more than 200 acres. Several miles of walking trails, a unique dog park, and the New Castle County mounted patrol based there create further points of interest. Tours of the stable, feed room, and riding arenas are also offered; during a hands-on activity, visitors can groom a horse.

Historic Sites and Cultural Insights

New Castle County can also be explored through its history. Fort Delaware State Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bellevue State Park was formerly a DuPont estate. Rockwood was built between 1851 and 1854 in the Gothic Revival style; its design was intended to reflect the beauty of an English country estate. A self-guided tour of the museum’s first floor is available there, while staff nearby are available to answer questions. A six-acre Heritage Garden surrounds the historic mansion.

A central historic stop is the New Castle Court House. The building was constructed in 1732. On June 15, 1776, thirteen delegates voted there for independence from Pennsylvania and Great Britain, thereby establishing the State of Delaware. The New Castle Court House Museum conveys Delaware’s history through guided interpretation and exhibitions from different perspectives: from Indigenous communities and the first European settlers to legislators, prisoners, and judges, as well as escaped slaves and the free African American community.

Local Character and a Suitable Base

For a trip involving self-prepared meals or an interest in regional products, the Route 9 Farmers’ Market is one of the noteworthy places to visit. Local-sourced fruits and vegetables, meat, and prepared foods from vendors are offered there. Together with the parks, trails, and historic institutions, this creates a destination where active and more leisurely activities can be alternated.

A vacation rental in New Castle County can therefore be particularly suitable if you do not want to limit your days to a single attraction. Plan your accommodation according to your preferred balance of nature, culture, and regional exploration, while keeping the different focuses of the individual places in mind. For further orientation, you can also include Wilmington, Newark, Brookside, Brandywine, Bear, Claymont, New Castle, Hockessin, Delaware City and Christiana.
