Raymer: Traces of Railroads and Agriculture
Accommodation in Raymer
The stories of Raymer and New Raymer bring together railroads, trade, and agriculture. They trace a path from early supply and market connections to homestead settlements. The area also offers open plains and a nearby hiking trail to the first Pawnee Butte. Travelers choosing Raymer as a destination can weigh cultural history and landscape as different areas of focus.
Railroads, Supply, and Trade
Raymer was a station on a railroad line through Weld County. The Star Filling Station tells a different story of mobility and supply: built in 1925, it provided farmers, residents, businesses, and travelers with fuel, lubricants, and minor services until 1965. On November 15, 2019, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Its history connects the daily lives of different groups of users with changes in transportation and supply.
The Truxaw & Kruger Grocery / Seldin’s Cash Grocery building dates to 1909 and was added to the state historic register in 2018. It contributed to New Raymer’s development as a railroad and market town serving the surrounding dryland farming and livestock operations. The State Bank of Raymer is associated with the development of financial services in rural New Raymer and was added to the state historic register in 2019. Together, these three stories show different aspects of economic life: supply, trade, and financial services.
Homesteads and Agriculture
Settlement of Younglund Ranch as a homestead began in 1912. In 1913, Ernest and Pearl Knoll built a homestead cabin on their 160-acre property near New Raymer.
Current agricultural activities are also part of the area’s story: cattle are still raised at Tappy Ranch, and Schmeeckle Farm continues to produce agricultural products. So alongside the homestead stories are ongoing cattle ranching and agricultural production.
Open Plains and Trails
The Pawnee Pioneer Trails Byway follows historic routes across open plains, used by Indigenous peoples and pioneers. Nearby, a 1.5-mile trail takes hikers to the first Pawnee Butte. The two experiences offer different emphases: the byway connects the landscape with the history of the routes, while the hiking trail has a specified length and named destination. If you’d like to focus on historic routes and landscape, the byway offers a different thematic perspective from a hike to a single destination.
Community and Choosing Your Vacation Rental
The New Raymer Car Show was held for the eighth time in 2024 as a community event and fundraiser. Proceeds supported the restoration of historic buildings on Centre Avenue in New Raymer. If you’re planning a trip around a future event, check the dates in advance.
When searching for a vacation rental, you can start by considering which focus will shape your trip: local and settlement history, agriculture, or landscape. For families planning together, the market town and homestead stories can offer a conversation starter; the hiking trail provides a different thematic focus.
