Lincoln County combines rolling prairie with several river valleys, sand hills and exceptionally dark night skies. This makes it possible to shape a trip in many different ways: You can explore railroad history and the region’s past, plan a nature trail to the Limon Wetlands, go fishing in spring or end the evening gazing at constellations, the Milky Way and shooting stars.

Experience the Landscape and Night Sky

The landscape of Lincoln County is not limited to a single image. Rolling prairie, river valleys and sand hills give the region changing contours and make choosing excursions an important part of trip planning. The particularly dark night sky offers its own perspective on your stay. Families can plan cultural activities or exercise during the day and later observe constellations, the Milky Way or shooting stars together.

Railroad History in Limon and Hugo

In Limon, the Limon Heritage Museum is a destination for anyone interested in the history of the prairie and its transportation routes. The museum includes a restored 1910 railroad depot and an 1894 one-room schoolhouse. The museum is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; it is closed on Wednesdays.

The Hugo Union Pacific Railroad Roundhouse also tells the story of railroad development. The building was constructed in 1909 and is the only surviving brick roundhouse in Colorado. Another historical connection reaches back to 1888: that was when the Colorado and Kansas Railroad began construction through Colorado’s central plains, while Genoa had not yet been marked on the map. These sites are suitable for trip planning in which regional history becomes tangible not only through dates, but through specific buildings and places.

Nature, Fishing and Outdoor Activities

At the Limon Wetlands, a surfaced path leads for half a mile to an information kiosk and an observation pavilion. In summer, the wetlands are home to, among others, sora rails, Virginia rails, belted kingfishers, yellow-headed blackbirds, great-tailed grackles and blue-winged teal. This gives your stay a clear focus on nature without requiring you to plan the entire day as a hike.

The Karval Reservoir State Wildlife Area offers stocked trout fishing in spring. For another type of active stay, the Tamarack Golf Club has a public nine-hole golf course. The Prairie Ridge Buffalo Ranch expands the range of options with activities involving bison, including ranch tours, campfires and buffalo burgers. Depending on your interests, you can choose between nature observation, fishing, golf and a ranch-related experience.

Consider Transportation Routes When Choosing Accommodation

Interstate 70 crosses the northern part of Lincoln County and intersects US-24 and State Highway 71 in Limon. East of Limon, Interstate 70 meets US 40/287, which runs through Hugo. In Arriba, there is a rest area for travelers at the only interstate exit. This transportation information helps you assess the location of a vacation rental or vacation home based on the planned direction of your excursions. Before searching, consider whether your stay should focus more on museums and railroad history, the wetlands, the spring experience at the reservoir or various destinations along the transportation routes.

For families with different interests, a varied daily rhythm can make sense: a museum with set opening hours, a surfaced path at the wetlands or an outdoor activity. In spring, stocked trout fishing is available as a seasonal option; in summer, the wetland bird species take center stage. This allows you to choose accommodation in Lincoln County based on your preferred mix of history, landscape and activities without limiting the trip to just one type of experience.

More destinations to choose from: Pitkin, Cheyenne County, Larimer, Costilla County, Grand, Sedgwick County and Lake County.
