Estes Park combines impressive mountain landscapes with waterways, culture and unusual excursion destinations. In Rocky Mountain National Park, you can expect more than 350 miles of hiking trails, ranging from scenic nature paths to challenging mountain peaks. At the same time, the town offers opportunities for more leisurely walks, museum visits, events and activities at Lake Estes. When choosing your vacation rental, it is therefore worthwhile to first determine your preferred travel style: Should the trip be shaped primarily by mountain panoramas, walks, water activities, culture or a varied mix?

Mountains, Lake and Trails Around Estes Park

A prominent starting point for exploring the landscape is Trail Ridge Road. It begins in Estes Park and leads through mountain meadows, forest areas and alpine tundra in Rocky Mountain National Park. Those who want to combine different hiking interests will find both scenic nature paths and challenging mountain peaks there. Lake Estes offers a different perspective: The lake is surrounded by the 3.75-mile Lake Estes Trail. Several miles of trails branch off from this trail and lead into downtown, to Stanley Park and beyond.

The town itself also offers a variety of destinations for a less mountain-focused day. The Riverwalk follows the Big Thompson River and Fall River through downtown Estes Park and provides access to shops and restaurants. The two rivers meet at George Hix Riverside Plaza, where you will find statues, bridges, fountains and seating. Mrs. Walsh's Garden features a winding footpath leading to a quiet pond. For water activities, Lake Estes Marina rents kayaks, pontoon boats and paddleboards. You can also rent pedal carts and cruise bikes there for rides along the Lake Estes Trail.

Culture, History and Special Experiences

Estes Park can also be explored through its cultural and historic sites. The Historic Park Theatre is the oldest still-operating single-screen movie theater in the United States that was originally built as a movie theater. It operates year-round as a cinema and venue for live events. The Stanley Home Museum offers tours of the Stanley family's residence, built in 1904. The tours require tickets, take place daily and are limited to no more than eight guests per tour.

For a look at the area's history, the Historic Fall River Hydroplant is available as a publicly accessible interpretive center. It displays the original equipment installed by F. O. Stanley. The Knoll is a viewpoint overlooking downtown and is located at the ruins of a stone cabin built in 1907. A later cabin built by the Birch family in 1908 is listed in the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. Educational programs and tours also cover topics such as birdwatching, geology, photography, gardening and painting.

The Estes Park Aerial Tramway takes visitors to the summit of Prospect Mountain and is one of the few European-style aerial tramways in the United States. For an evening outdoors, Performance Park is a good choice: The open-air amphitheater on Fall River near downtown offers free summer concerts and live performances. It also features accessible climbing routes. The open-house evenings at the Estes Park Memorial Observatory are free and do not require reservations.

Which Base Suits Your Trip?

If your trip includes many trails and nature experiences, you can pay particular attention when searching for a vacation rental to which activities you can reach each day and the order in which you want to combine them. For a more urban-focused itinerary, Riverwalk, shops, restaurants, theaters and museums are important stops. Those who prefer water activities can make the Lake Estes Trail and the marina's offerings the focus of their trip. Families with different interests can combine nature, culture, recreational activities and more leisurely walks without limiting the trip to just one type of experience.

Even with changing daily plans, Estes Park offers a broad range of themes: The Estes Valley Community Center has swimming and leisure pools, a sports hall, cardio and strength-training areas, as well as fitness classes. The Estes Valley Recreation and Park District operates an 18-hole golf course as well as a 9-hole course or disc golf course with panoramic views and abundant wildlife.
