Huerfano County combines striking mountain landscapes, diverse trails, and a multifaceted cultural history. Between the heights of the Sangre de Cristos and the Spanish Peaks, the red cliffs of the Dakota Wall, and the Devil’s Stairsteps, the landscape reveals strong contrasts. For your trip planning, this means you can combine nature experiences, museums, regional history, and creative events into different daily itineraries.

Landscapes and Trails Around the Spanish Peaks

The Highway of Legends runs through this varied landscape. A 35-mile extension follows Huerfano/Las Animas County Road No. 46 through the San Isabel National Forest. Huerfano County is considered a broken, tilted, and eroded plateau connecting the mountains with the high plains. West Spanish Peak is also known for its dikes radiating outward from the mountain.

For walks and longer outings, Lathrop State Park offers various starting points. The 3-mile Cuerno Verde Trail loops around Martin Lake and is popular with cyclists. The Hogback Trail passes through sandstone formations and over a rocky hogback ridge. The park’s two main trails, the Hogback Trail and the Cuerno Verde Trail, offer exceptional views of the Spanish Peaks, Greenhorn Mountain, and Pikes Peak. At Cuchara Mountain Park, an 18-hole disc golf course, the Lower Baker Creek Trail, and the Baker Creek Connector Trail add to the range of activities.
