Gunnison County combines impressive waterscapes, traces of history and diverse opportunities for cyclists. Here, you can explore the three reservoirs of Curecanti National Recreation Area, encounter historical discoveries in Gothic or Gunnison, and plan your days around selected mountain biking trails. For families, this mix offers the opportunity to alternate active pursuits, nature observations and cultural experiences without limiting the trip to a single activity.

Reservoirs, Scenic Byways and Roads Through the Landscape

Curecanti National Recreation Area encompasses three reservoirs on the Gunnison River: Blue Mesa Reservoir, Morrow Point Reservoir and Crystal Reservoir. Another prominent body of water is Taylor Park Reservoir, covering 2,000 hectares. It is home to trout, kokanee salmon and pike. These places give your trip different scenic focal points, even if you do not want to be active every day.

Those who enjoy exploring will also find several distinctive roads and routes in the county. Gunnison County includes sections of the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway and the Silver Thread Scenic Byway. Kebler Pass is a 30-mile scenic road through Colorado’s largest aspen grove. Via Gunnison County Road 12, it connects Crested Butte with Paonia.

Mountain Biking Experiences with Different Focuses

Hartman Rocks offers 40 miles of singletrack and 33 miles of roads open to bicycles. This makes it particularly easy to structure a stay around cycling. Between the base area and the summit of Mount Crested Butte, Crested Butte Mountain Resort has more than 30 miles of singletrack for hiking, cycling and trail running. In summer, the resort also operates a downhill mountain bike park with more than 30 miles of lift-served singletrack.

These differences can help you choose your travel style: At Hartman Rocks, designated bicycle trails and roads are the focus, while Mount Crested Butte also includes lift-served downhill routes. If you are traveling with children of different ages, you can alternate active days with cultural or scenic activities. Beaver Creek Trail in the Gunnison State Wildlife Area is restricted to foot and equestrian traffic; this rule should be included in your daily planning when comparing different ways of getting around.

History from Gothic to Gunnison

Gothic was founded in 1879 after the discovery of silver and grew to as many as 3,000 residents within two years. Seven buildings in the historic town area were designated for their historical value. The unfinished palisade at Ohio Pass also recalls the plans of the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad to build a railway over Ohio Pass to the North Fork of the Gunnison River and onward to California.

The Gunnison Pioneer Museum preserves the first post office in Gunnison County, built in the early 1870s and designated in 1876. Today, the museum displays approximately 90 antique vehicles. Marble also has a special cultural and historical connection: White marble used for monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier came from there.
