Thornton between Trails, Parks and Culture

Thornton combines expansive open spaces with art, events and various opportunities for active vacation days. More than 140 miles of trails and over 2,500 acres of parkland shape the city as a destination for anyone who wants to combine exercise and relaxation. When looking for a vacation rental in Thornton, you can therefore first consider whether you want to focus your stay primarily on nature, leisure activities, culture or a combination of these.

Parks, Trails and Bodies of Water

Thornton’s public parks are open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. This gives your daily planning a clear timeframe, without every activity requiring a fixed event date. The Gravel Lakes are open from March 15 to October 31, from sunrise to sunset. Anyone wishing to include these bodies of water in their plans should consider the travel period and the stated opening hours together.

A special natural area is the Big Dry Creek corridor. It offers opportunities for passive recreation, wildlife habitat and open spaces. At the same time, Big Dry Creek and its floodplain are an important natural resource for the east-west movement of wildlife and the regional connectivity of trails. More than 300 acres of open land have been preserved along the corridor. This combination of open space and connection to nature complements Thornton’s more developed city parks with another side of the city.

Carpenter Park also has its own focus. It features a skate park and trails; pedal boat and canoe rentals are also available. The Carpenter Recreation Center offers an indoor running and walking track with a soft synthetic surface. Twelve laps equal one mile. This makes it possible to combine different ideas for a day in Thornton without turning them into one single fixed route. The city parks also include three skate parks.

Art, Events and Shared Experiences

The Thornton Arts & Culture Center at 9209 Dorothy Boulevard opened in 2011 as a municipal center for the performing and visual arts. It includes a gallery, a theater area, a city archive and offices. For exhibitions at the OZ Gallery, the center is open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., as well as every second Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Check these hours when planning your day if the gallery is to be an important part of your stay.

Arts Thornton presents year-round educational programs from the Thornton Arts Academy, seasonal community events, the ArtsThornton music series, quarterly OZ Gallery exhibitions and public art. At the Thornton Harvest Fest, a skate competition with judging categories for scooter, bicycle and skateboard riders takes place at the Thomas J. Slocum Memorial Skate Park. In addition, more than 100 artisans, home-based businesses and other vendors are represented at the festival. Three festivals take place annually in Thornton, meaning that events, alongside nature and exercise, can also shape the character of a trip.

For another leisure option, Thornton has a public golf course covering 144 acres with a par of 72, a driving range, a putting green and a restaurant. Those who enjoy planning varied vacation days can choose between trails, parks, cultural offerings, festivals and golf. The right vacation rental or vacation home should above all suit your preferred daily rhythm and the experiences you want to make the focus of your time in Thornton.
