Yuba County: Nature, River Landscapes, and Gold Rush History
Accommodation in Yuba County
In the eastern and northern parts of Yuba County, the landscape gives way to foothills and open spaces. There are also river landscapes, Gold Rush history, and a wide range of activities. For your trip planning, this means you can focus on nature, culture, or seasonal experiences and choose your vacation rental based on your preferred focus.
Nature and Activities at Spenceville Wildlife Area
Spenceville Wildlife Area covers approximately 11,900 acres of blue oak and gray pine forests, as well as riparian woodland. Fishing, hiking, and horseback riding on equestrian trails are possible there; designated bike trails are also available. The activities offer different ways to experience the area: you can focus your stay on nature experiences on foot or by bike, explore the equestrian trails, or go fishing. This lets you plan the nature portion of your trip around the type of activity that interests you most.
The river landscape also has several facets. Marysville in Yuba County lies at the confluence of the Feather River and the Yuba River. Ellis Lake was formed from an oxbow of the Yuba River. One location is therefore known for the confluence of two rivers, while the other is a lake formed from a former river channel. One specific route option is the Yuba Goldfields Trail: its three miles refer to the full round-trip route.
Gold Rush History and Cultural Sites
Several notable traces of history come together in Marysville. Marysville Chinatown is the last Chinatown dating from the Gold Rush era; several landmarks from that period also remain in the downtown area. The Bok Kai Temple is the only known temple in the United States that venerates Bok Kai. The original Bok Kai Temple in Marysville was built in 1854. The Mary Aaron Museum preserves local artifacts and complements the historical themes with a collection on local history.
Museums also offer different ways to explore the region's past. The Chinese American Museum of Northern California is housed in an original Gold Rush building dating from 1858. Exhibits at the Yuba Feather Museum range from artifacts of the Maidu and Chinese immigrants to gold mining, the timber industry, early skis, and snowshoes. Gold Trader Flat offers free tours of a recreated town; tour times may vary.
In Wheatland, Durst-Hop Ranch was the site of one of the first labor disturbances in California's history. The Little Red Schoolhouse is located at 111 Main Street in Wheatland, California; admission is free. Check visitor information before your visit.
Seasonal Experiences and Events
Bishop's Pumpkin Farm features a corn maze and a pick-your-own pumpkin patch. Both experiences are seasonal, and schedules may change. If you are traveling with children and would like to include these activities, it's best to coordinate your visit with the latest dates and times.
The annual Bok Kai Parade takes place in historic downtown Marysville; the date and program may change. Marysville Raceway offers a different focus: competitions in the Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Hobby Stocks classes are held on a quarter-mile clay oval track. The Marysville Stampede began in 1933. These details can help you think of nature activities, historic sites, and events as distinct parts of your trip.
Choose a Vacation Rental That Fits Your Itinerary
When choosing a vacation rental, first consider which experiences you want to shape your trip. If you mainly plan to use designated bike trails, hike, ride horses, or fish, you'll have different priorities than if your stay focuses on temples, Chinatown, and museums. Seasonal farm activities and events, in turn, depend on their respective dates.
