Yolo combines expansive natural landscapes, diverse trails and regional culture with special opportunities for wildlife watching and cycling holidays. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Yolo can tailor their trip to their own interests: Active days in the canyons can be followed by nature observations in wetlands, a visit to the arboretum or a detour to art and wineries.

Landscapes between Canyon, Riverbank and Wetland

Cache Creek Canyon Regional Park encompasses more than 600 acres of pristine natural landscape. Oak forests, pine trees, grassland meadows with cottonwoods, as well as riparian habitats with rushes, sedges and similar vegetation shape the scenery. The Blue Ridge Trail begins within the park and forms an 8-mile loop. It includes a very steep climb with an elevation gain of approximately 2,100 feet. The route is therefore especially interesting for travelers who want to combine their days on holiday with a challenging trail experience.

The Capay Open Space Park offers a different landscape. It provides direct access to lower Cache Creek and more than two miles of hiking trails. Its natural environment includes lowland floodplains, riparian forests, riparian shrubland and a grass-covered oak savanna. The UC Davis Putah Creek Riparian Reserve also has its own distinctive character: This 640-acre natural riparian and grassland ecosystem on the southern edge of the UC Davis campus is used for teaching and research, wildlife and habitat protection, and community engagement.

Hiking, Cycling and Experiencing Wildlife

When planning your days, it is worth taking the different trail profiles into account. The trails of the Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve are open year-round from sunrise to sunset for hikers. The reserve lies in steep, inland canyons, on slopes and along ridges of California’s Inner Coast Range. In Cache Creek Regional Park, County Road 40 is closed to vehicles but open to hikers, horseback riders and cyclists. This makes it possible to explore the surroundings from a more active perspective as well.

The Davis Bike Loop is approximately 12 miles long and runs through the Greenbelt, passing most of Davis’s major bicycle infrastructure. For families or groups with different interests, this cycling route can offer a different day-trip idea from the steep canyon routes. Wildlife observation, on the other hand, is the focus at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. The area covers approximately 16,600 acres and provides habitat for fish, waterfowl, shorebirds and wading birds, neotropical migratory birds, birds of prey, invertebrates, snakes, turtles, toads and bats.

At the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, scientists, bird enthusiasts and schoolchildren visit the wetlands on guided tours to experience waterfowl up close. Wildlife watching, birdwatching, hunting and nature education programs are also available there. The UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden offers a quieter form of exploring nature: Admission is free, and its gardens, natural areas and landscapes are open around the clock all year round.

Art, Wineries and Regional Impressions

Yolo is not only a destination for trails and wildlife. Gibson House and Property offers exhibitions, programs and community spaces where regional art and culture can be explored. At Gallery 625, emerging and established artists are given space and opportunities for art exhibitions featuring a diverse selection of artistic media. Yolo County’s wine country also has more than 14 small, local and family-run wineries.

The tasting rooms are located along scenic routes between Napa Valley and the Sacramento River and can be reached from one another by car. This allows you to add a culinary and regional dimension to your trip planning without giving up the focus on nature. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus primarily on hiking trails, birdwatching, cycling tours, art or wine country.

Places for Further Trip Planning

For additional orientation, you can also explore the places Davis, West Sacramento, Woodland, Winters, Rumsey and Esparto. This makes it easier to compare which starting point best suits your planned nature, cultural or cycling experiences.
