Tulare: Giant Sequoias, Nature and Californian History
Accommodation in Tulare
Tulare combines impressive nature with an unusually diverse range of historical experiences. Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park are located in Tulare County, where visitors can hike among towering giant sequoias. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth organizing planned excursions by landscape, season and desired distance.
Giant Sequoias, Mountain Landscapes and Seasonal Nature
The Giant Forest offers ranger information about the trails, maps for purchase, ranger programs and self-guided interpretive trails through meadows and giant sequoia groves. The Congress Trail is a paved, two-mile loop trail. It begins near the General Sherman Tree and leads through a grove of majestic giant sequoias. This provides a choice of different nature experiences for planning the day, without all trails having the same character.
Mineral King also reveals a distinct side of the landscape. The Mineral King Valley is subalpine in character and includes forests of pine, giant sequoias and firs, as well as granite and slate formations. The valley lies at an elevation of 7,800 to 14,000 feet. The area includes the Cold Springs Nature Loop Trail and the Eagle and Mosquito Lakes Trail. Mineral King is open seasonally from late May to October and is closed in winter because of the amount of snow. This period should therefore be incorporated directly into travel planning.
The Crystal Cave offers another striking landscape experience. The marble cavern has a 0.5-mile loop trail through the cave. Vehicles with a total length of more than 22 feet are not permitted on Crystal Cave Road. Anyone traveling in a larger vehicle should take this point into account before planning the excursion.
Visitors reach the Trail of 100 Giants and the surrounding recreation areas via the Western Divide Route. At Pixley National Wildlife Refuge, visitors can observe Canada geese that overwinter there seasonally. They stay there from September to March, with peak numbers of up to 6,000 birds. Depending on the time of year, a day in the giant sequoia forest can therefore be complemented by seasonal birdwatching.
Access Routes and Different Starting Points
Sequoia National Park can be reached via the Ash Mountain Entrance on Highway 198 through Visalia, as well as via the Lookout Point Entrance from Visalia and the exit near Three Rivers. The vehicle length restriction also applies on Crystal Cave Road.
For families with different interests, the documented formats can support clear day planning: a paved two-mile loop trail, a shorter loop through a marble cavern, interpretive trails through meadows and giant sequoia groves, or seasonal wildlife observations. This does not imply a specific suitability for every age group, but you can base your selection on the specific trails and the time of year.
History and Culture in Tulare County
Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park preserves a historic Californian town that was founded, financed and governed by African Americans. The annual Rededication commemorates the contributions of African Americans to the history of California and the United States. The site adds a history to the nature experiences that can form a separate focus in the travel program.
The original building of the Tulare County Museum also offers specific insights: it displays Yokuts baskets, artifacts from the pioneer era and agricultural equipment. The Museum Alliance Trail includes a map of participating museums in Tulare County. Another historical landmark is the Charter Oak, also called Election Tree, which stands at the site where the election to organize Tulare County took place on July 10, 1852.
At Hospital Rock, there are rock paintings and mortars made by Native Americans. Together with Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park and the Tulare County Museum, this creates a cultural section of the trip that does not need to be considered separately from the mountain landscapes. Depending on your focus, when planning your holiday apartment you can choose between days in nature, museum visits or a combination of both.
