Sierra County combines impressive landscapes with traces of the Gold Rush, historic sites, and a variety of trails. When planning your trip, the question is therefore less about choosing a single highlight and more about deciding which mix of experiences you want: Would you like to explore forests and rivers, spend time on lakes, discover historic sites, or use groomed trails in winter? You can choose a vacation rental based on this personal focus.

Forests, Rivers, and Trails for Active Days

The River Canyon refers to the area where Highway 49 follows the North Yuba River from the bridge area west of Indian Valley through Goodyears Bar to Downieville. Near Downieville, the Empire Creek Trail passes through extensive old-growth forests. Species found there include pileated woodpeckers, northern goshawks, fishers, and California spotted owls. Anyone who wants to combine hiking with nature observation will find a particularly good reason here to explore the surroundings attentively.

Several trails offer different ways to experience the landscape. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses Highway 49 northeast of Sierra City and then climbs in switchbacks along the southwest side of the Buttes above the town. The Wild Plum Loop Trail begins near Wild Plum Campground and follows Haypress Creek through riparian forests that offer good opportunities for birdwatching. Loves Falls can be reached via an easy footpath from Highway 49. For further activities, historic Henness Pass Road offers opportunities for four-wheel-drive vehicles, cycling, and hiking. The Lafayette Ridge OHV Trail passes through dense brushland to a panoramic view of the Middle Yuba River.

Lakes and Water Experiences

The Lakes Basin Recreation Area contains numerous glacially formed lakes, including Upper and Lower Sardine Lakes, Packer Lake, and Gold Lake. At Gold Lake, there is a boat launch with a large parking area for boat trailers directly on Gold Lake Road; the lake is also suitable for sailing. Anyone planning water activities or transporting a boat will find suitable options here. During the spring snowmelt, the river offers Class 4 and 5 whitewater rafting.

The Sand Pond Interpretive Trail offers a different experience: It is wheelchair accessible and introduces visitors to the flora and fauna of a riparian habitat. Due to its elevation, Sierra County also has one of the longest wildflower-viewing seasons in California. Depending on the time of year and your interests, you can therefore choose among water activities, forests, wildflower viewing, and more challenging pursuits.

Gold Rush, Mining, and Historic Sites

The Downieville Museum presents the life of the local community from its origins in the Gold Rush to the present day. It is housed in a stone building with original iron doors and shutters dating from 1852. A historic building also contains exhibits on timber production, agriculture, the Washoe, and fraternal and sororal organizations, including the Rebekah Lodge.

The Kentucky Mine offers tours of the mine and stamp mill twice daily, including a demonstration of an operating stamp mill. The Sierra City School, built in 1883, is eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places at the local level of significance under Criterion A in the area of education. In Sierra City, Main Street preserves numerous buildings from around the turn of the century as well as wooden sidewalks. The history of the ranches in Sierra Valley also shapes the area: They were settled in the 1850s and supplied Truckee, the mines in western Sierra County, and the Comstock mines in the 1860s with dairy products, hay, and cattle.

Trip Planning by Season and Focus

In winter, the Lakes Basin Recreation Area offers miles of groomed roads and trails for cross-country skiing. Yuba Pass Snow Park is located 13 miles northeast of Sierra City on Highway 49. From there, trails lead to Little Truckee Summit, Jackson Meadows Reservoir to the southeast, and the Bassetts staging area to the northwest. The main roads into Sierra County are regularly maintained and cleared during snowfall. Information booths are available for orientation in Downieville, Sierra City, Loyalton, and Sierraville. Sierra Hot Springs is located in Sierraville at 521 Campbell Hot Springs Road, Sierraville, California 96126.

When choosing a vacation rental, first consider which experiences should define most of your trip. Nature trails, lakes, historic sites, and winter activities each create a different focus.
