Harmony – Crafts, Cheese and Coastal Landscape
Accommodation in Harmony
Harmony combines the history of local dairy farming with crafts, glass art and an impressive coastal landscape. The town was founded in 1869 amid a growing local dairy industry and was home to the Harmony Valley Creamery Association. For almost half a century, Harmony was considered the unofficial capital of dairy production on the Central Coast. Today, Harmony is described as a small artists’ colony – a character you can embrace when planning a trip focused on food, culture and nature.
Dairy Farming and Local History
The former importance of the creamery is evident in several places. The former site of the Harmony Valley Creamery Association was developed into a center for handmade crafts in 1970. Part of the original Harmony Creamery has been preserved at Harmony Cellars; old brick paths run around the building. Harmony therefore offers not only individual attractions but also tangible links to the town’s development.
The culinary side can also be incorporated into your trip. Harmony Valley Creamery produces a complete selection of artisan cheeses and dairy products. Freshly made cheese curds are offered daily at the Harmony Dairy Shoppe. There is also small-batch ice cream. Those looking for a holiday apartment with a focus on regional culinary experiences will find a particular highlight of the town here.
Glass Art, Ceramics and Hands-On Experiences
Harmony Glassworks was founded in 2007 by glassblower and instructor Eric Dandurand. The venue combines an art gallery with a studio for contemporary glass art. Visitors who want not only to view exhibitions but also to try it themselves can take private, hands-on glassblowing lessons; no prior experience is required.
Another destination is the Harmony Pottery Studio & Gallery. Works by more than 150 artists are displayed there, and since 1973 the studio has also housed a collection of ceramic art and porcelain jewelry. For families with different interests, this cultural focus may play a role in choosing where to stay: Some travelers want to discover crafts, while others look for local history or for unusual objects and materials.
Coastal Landscape and Choice of Excursions
Harmony Cellars is a family-run winery founded in 1989 by Chuck and Kim Mulligan. The rooftop terrace offers expansive views across the coastal landscape. The winery is located along the scenic Highway 1, five miles south of Cambria. The Harmony Headlands State Park is also important for orientation: It lies 3 miles south of Harmony and offers a short trail to coastal marine terrace grasslands with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
