Discover San Joaquin: Delta, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in San Joaquin
San Joaquin combines an extensive network of waterways with nature experiences, museums and places where the region’s history can be experienced particularly vividly. In the San Joaquin Delta, the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River meet before flowing into San Francisco Bay. More than 1,000 miles of navigable rivers, streams and channels offer opportunities for fishing, boating, camping and other water-based activities. For your trip planning, it is therefore worth considering early on whether you want to focus your stay primarily on the water, in nature or on cultural discoveries.
Waterways and Activities in the Delta
Those who enjoy being out on the water will find a large two-lane boat ramp with a floating dock at Mossdale Crossing Regional Park. The park also provides access to the San Joaquin, Middle and Old Rivers. In the Stockton Channel, a deep-waterway leads to an active port that is directly connected to the Pacific Ocean. Stockton Downtown Marina complements this maritime setting with kayak rentals and a waterfront promenade for walking.
Quieter stays by the water are also possible. Westgate Landing Regional Park has a 0.5-mile shoreline and is suitable for fishing and picnics. It has 11 sites for camping without hookups or for fully self-contained RVs; electrical, water and sewer hookups are not available. Keep these missing amenities in mind if you want to combine a vacation rental or vacation home as a fixed base with individual days spent in nature.
Nature Trails, Lakes and Regional Landscapes
The Mediterranean climate of San Joaquin County brings warm, dry summers and mild winters. One notable natural site is Caswell Memorial State Park, which protects one of California’s last remaining valley oak riparian forests. At the Woodbridge Wilderness Area, you will find native flora and fauna typical of San Joaquin County, as well as a 0.25-mile shoreline along the Mokelumne River. Anglers can catch trout, black bass and catfish there.
Different trail lengths are available for shorter nature experiences. The Mi-Wuk Trail is 1.5 miles long and passes through old-growth groves. The Yokuts Trail is a 0.25-mile, low-barrier nature trail. The Sunshine Trail showcases native plant habitats that have shaped local history. Other regional destinations include Oak Grove Lake, covering ten acres and seasonally stocked with catfish and trout, as well as three-acre Wortley Lake, which features a 40-foot-high water fountain.
Museums, Gardens and Special Discoveries
San Joaquin is also well suited to days that alternate between culture and nature. The World of Wonders Science Museum offers interactive, science-based exhibits and programs for all age groups. It is located one block north of Lodi Transit Station. Haggin Museum is located in Victory Park at the intersection of Pershing Avenue and Rose Street, not far from Interstate 5. The San Joaquin County Historical Museum has eight exhibition buildings and four historic buildings. Every December, it hosts the Festival of Trees.
Micke Grove brings together several different experiences: The park has an 18-hole disc golf course, a Japanese Garden with cherry blossom trees, a tea house and a koi pond, as well as Micke Grove Zoo. The zoo is home to native animals and exotic species from around the world, including endangered cotton-top tamarins and black-and-white ruffed lemurs. The World Peace Rose Garden features impressive rose varieties and messages of peace from students in the region and from people around the world.
The region’s cultural history is equally varied. Harmony Grove Church was built in 1859 and is protected as a registered landmark; its features include wooden pews and glass windows with cabinet surrounds. Stockton was selected as the site of the Filipino American National Historical Museum because of its historic role as a center of family, community and working life for Filipino Americans. The museum preserves historical memorabilia collected by FANHS chapters and private donors. Stockton Cambodian Buddhist Temple displays more than 90 colorful, jewel-encrusted, larger-than-life statues depicting the life and history of the Cambodian Buddha. A Cambodian New Year celebration takes place there every April.
