Fort Irwin combines military history with tours and recreational activities. At the same time, access is clearly regulated: All people aged 18 and older who enter Fort Irwin need a background check and an installation access pass. Check the current official access requirements before traveling, as requirements may change. That is why this question should be part of your planning early on when choosing a vacation rental for a trip to Fort Irwin.

History Through the Ages

People of the Lake Mojave period likely lived in the area around Fort Irwin almost 15,000 years ago. Later, a camp near Bitter Springs served travelers on the Old Spanish Trail and, afterward, the Mormon Trail. Both routes connected Salt Lake City with California. Bitter Springs was on the eastern edge of Fort Irwin and was a favored stopover.

The development of the National Training Center (NTC) can also be traced through several stages: a concept from 1976 was followed by its initial implementation in 1980. The NTC was officially activated on October 16, 1980; Fort Irwin returned to active status on July 1, 1981. The NTC's early years of operation extended through 1984.

The National Training Center and 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment Museum covers the history of the Mojave Anti-Aircraft Range and its development into Camp Irwin and Fort Irwin. The General Robert W. Cone National Training Center Fort Irwin Heritage Center displays historical training technology that has been used to train soldiers over the years, including the “God Gun.”
