Big Bear Lake combines a man-made freshwater lake with water activities, paved trails, winter sports, and traces of regional history. The lake is 7 miles long and half a mile wide. Those looking for a vacation rental in Big Bear Lake can therefore plan their stay around very different interests: from a day on the water and a bike ride to a self-guided tour through historic Holcomb Valley.

Water Activities at Big Bear Lake

From spring through fall, Big Bear Lake offers sightseeing cruises, fishing, boating, jet skiing, and kayaking. The marinas offer rentals of pontoon boats, fishing boats, kayaks, jet skis, and stand-up paddleboards. In addition, scenic excursion boats operate daily. The lake is particularly well known among anglers for rainbow trout fishing. Fishing charters help beginners learn how to fish.

Boulder Bay Park also provides access to a range of vacation activities. It has picnic tables, a pavilion, open spaces, a winding path, and restroom facilities. Launching a hand-carried, human-powered watercraft from the shoreline is permitted after inspection and approval by the Municipal Water District. For a stay with children, the playground area at Rotary Park adds another activity option.

Paved Trails for Cyclists and Walkers

Those who prefer to experience the lake on land will find several distinctly different trails. The Knickerbocker Creek Multi-Use Trail is a 1/2-mile paved bike path and provides non-motorized access to the Village and the lakeshore. The Alpine Pedal Path runs fully paved along the north shore of Big Bear Lake for 2.5 miles in one direction and offers views of the ski areas and the lake.

The Happy Hills Trail is 1,100 feet long, paved, and accessible. It runs alongside a creek and features picnic areas and a restroom facility. The Stanfield Marsh Boardwalk also passes through the Stanfield Marsh Wildlife and Waterfowl Preserve.

Winter Sports with Different Areas of Focus

At Snow Summit, winter sports are available from November through April, weather and conditions permitting. There is plenty of beginner terrain both in the base area and on the runs from the top all the way down. Bear Mountain is geared more toward visitors to the terrain parks, but it also offers groomed runs for beginners and experts. Those choosing accommodation for a winter stay can take these differences into account when planning their trip.

Wildlife, History, and Starry Skies

Big Bear Alpine Zoo is a rehabilitation facility for injured, orphaned, and human-imprinted wildlife. Gold Fever Trail is a suitable starting point for a three-hour, self-guided tour through historic Holcomb Valley. Along the way, visitors learn about Big Bear's gold-mining history and enjoy scenic views. Polique Canyon Road leads to this tour. In the Big Bear Valley, the night sky is dark enough to observe constellations, meteor showers, and even the Milky Way.

For trip planning, the Big Bear Visitors Center offers free Wi-Fi, public restrooms, brochures, interactive maps, and kiosks. This allows you to combine the available local experiences and choose a vacation rental based on whether water activities, bike trails, winter sports, history, or nature should be the focus of your stay.

If you would like to compare additional places for your trip planning, you can find Twin Peaks, Running Springs, Hesperia, Phelan, Parker Dam, Redlands, Joshua Tree, and Cajon Junction here.
