Discover Carmel-by-the-Sea
Accommodation in Carmel-By-The-Sea
Carmel-by-the-Sea sits above a white sand beach and is easy to explore on foot. Coastal paths, nature trails, mission history and art offer different ways to explore the area. You can choose the focus of your stay based on whether you’d most like to discover the coast, paths through a garden landscape or cultural sites.
Coast, Beach and Paths
Carmel Beach is at the end of Ocean Avenue. Above the beach runs the Scenic Pathway, paved with decomposed granite, with nine stairway access points leading down to the beach. The beach and pathway offer two specific options for anyone who wants to make the coastal character a focus of their trip.
Another nature destination lies in the area around Carmel-by-the-Sea: an access trail leads to the northern part of Carmel River State Beach. A cliffside path runs north of and parallel to the beach path. The locations are distinct: the Scenic Pathway is above Carmel Beach, while the paths at Carmel River State Beach are described as being in the surrounding area.
Nature Trails and Native Plants
Mission Trail Nature Preserve covers 34 acres and has three miles of hiking trails, as well as a garden of native plants. Lester Rowntree Native Plant Garden is within the preserve, with its entrance on Hatton Road. Visitors interested in plants and trails will find a different focus here than on the coast: the garden and paths of the natural area take center stage.
Mission History and Tor House
Carmel Mission, also called Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Río Carmelo, was founded in 1771. It was the second of 21 missions founded in Alta California. Today, Carmel Mission serves as an active Catholic parish and a museum; it is also a symbol of California’s cultural and religious history. Its founding year and place among the missions provide a specific historical connection to the area’s past.
Another cultural attraction is Tor House, a National Historic Landmark associated with poet Robinson Jeffers. Complete tours of the interior and grounds are available on Saturdays; tours are limited on Fridays. Reservations are recommended. Check current tour availability before your visit.
Art and Wine Tastings
Carmel-by-the-Sea has more than 50 art galleries within one square mile. The number of galleries may change. At the Carmel Art Walk, visitors can meet artists and visit 14 galleries owned and operated by local artists. The art walk takes place on the second Saturday of each month from 4 to 7 p.m. Check the date before your trip.
Wine tastings are another local draw: Carmel-by-the-Sea has 16 tasting rooms, within walking distance of the local hotels and inns. As this number may change over time, it should be checked before your trip.
Choosing a Focus for Your Stay
When choosing a vacation rental in Carmel-by-the-Sea, you can start by organizing your trip around a few themes: the coast and paths, the garden and hiking trails, or cultural history and art. When planning together, everyone can say whether landscapes, history or galleries should shape the stay. The calendar offers another distinction: Tor House has weekly tours, while the Carmel Art Walk takes place monthly. If one of these experiences is important to your trip, plan around it and check the relevant dates.
