Lassen: Discover Volcanoes, Lakes, and Trails
Accommodation in Lassen
Lassen combines an unusual landscape with many opportunities for active and varied vacation days. In Lassen County, the Sierra Nevada, the Cascade Range, the Modoc Plateau, and the Great Basin Desert meet. As a result, the region’s offerings range from high-altitude lakes and volcanic areas to historic sites, long trails, and local events. If you are looking for a vacation rental or holiday home in Lassen, you can tailor your trip planning according to whether you want to focus on water, nature, outdoor activities, or history.
Between Eagle Lake and Volcanic Landscapes
Eagle Lake lies at an elevation of 5,100 feet and is the second-largest natural freshwater lake located entirely within California. Its immediate watershed is situated on a high-elevation, semiarid plateau characterized by basaltic lava flows, volcanoes, and cinder cones. The shores are home to one of the last nesting colonies of ospreys, as well as the largest nesting colony of western grebes and eared grebes in the western United States. Eagle Lake trout are native exclusively to Eagle Lake.
The lake is suitable for water sports, fishing, and swimming. This allows a stay by the water to be combined with an appreciation of the natural environment without limiting the landscape to a single activity. Another opportunity for outdoor recreation is Susanville Ranch Park. This 1,100-acre shared-use recreation area in northeastern California belongs to Lassen County and the Bureau of Land Management and is managed by both.
Hiking, Loop Trails, and a Distinctive Scenic Route
Lassen Volcanic National Park awaits you with steaming fumaroles, meadows covered in wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes. The park has more than 150 miles of hiking trails. A three-mile loop trail leads to Bumpass Hell, the largest hydrothermal area in Lassen Volcanic National Park. This focus may be useful when choosing your accommodation if you want to spend your days primarily hiking and taking in the scenery.
The Lassen Scenic Byway is a 185-mile loop through Lassen National Forest and Lassen Volcanic National Park. Along the route, there are opportunities for hiking, photography, fishing, and camping. In addition, the Fort Sage OHV Area can be reached via Lassen County Road Fort Sage. The Devil's Corral Trailhead is located seven miles west of Susanville and can be reached via California Highway 36. From there, you can access the Susan River for swimming and fishing.
The Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail also offers several travel ideas. It is located in Lassen County along the Susan River and follows the former Fernley and Lassen Branch Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad for 25.4 miles from Susanville to Mason Station. The historic route remains a defining part of the trail. Today, the trail offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, cross-country skiing, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and walking dogs. Lassen County also has more than 60 miles of developed trails for hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding.
