Alpine County combines impressive mountain landscapes with traces of history and a variety of routes. For planning your trip, it is worth first choosing between nature experiences, culture, and sporting activities: You can explore a historic complex, relax in a mineral pool, plan hiking trails with different route profiles, or discover a scenic mountain pass road.

Hiking Trails for Different Day Plans

The Charity Valley Trail runs for approximately 8.5 miles through Alpine County and has an elevation gain of about 2,300 feet. For several miles, it follows Charity Valley Creek and passes waterfalls and beaver ponds. The trail is also open to horseback riders and mountain bikers. This allows you to choose the tour according to your preferred focus: the landscape, hiking, or cycling can take center stage.

The Burnside Lake Trail is shorter at two miles, but has an elevation gain of about 900 feet. It first leads through a dense mixed-conifer forest with wildflowers and old trees, then descends over rocky switchbacks. By contrast, the approximately eight-mile Thornburg Canyon Trail offers a historic wilderness route with an elevation gain of 2,500 feet. Those wishing to bring together different interests within their travel group can compare these routes based on their length and elevation profile.

The Curtz Lake Interpretive Loop near Woodfords is a short, paved interpretive trail for an easy, informative walk. To help prepare for hikes, the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce shop provides detailed topographic maps and hiking maps for Alpine County.

Lakes, Meadows, and a Distinctive Landscape

At Grover Hot Springs State Park, visitors can bathe in a mineral pool fed by six hot springs. The park is located at the end of Hot Springs Road, four miles west of Markleeville, at an elevation of 5,900 feet in an alpine meadow. This information helps you fit an excursion combining nature and bathing into your day plan.

The Indian Creek Recreation Area includes Indian Creek Reservoir, Indian Creek Campground, and the East Fork of the Carson River. Pines and sagebrush characterize the foothill landscape. The access road branches off California State Route 89 between Woodfords and Markleeville and is paved. Lake Alpine also offers various activities, including fishing, hiking, cycling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, boating, swimming, rock climbing, and wildlife viewing. During the summer months, Forest Service rangers offer interpretive programs there.

History and Scenic Roads

The Alpine County Historical Complex includes an Old Log Jail, the Webster School House, a Stamp Mill, a Basque Bread Oven, a Blacksmith Exhibit, historic machinery, and the museum. Construction of the Webster School House in Markleeville began in 1882; the first classes took place in October 1883. From the Alpine County Museum and Historical Complex, the view from a hill extends over Markleeville, the surrounding meadows, and the Sierra peaks to the west.

The Emigrant Trail over Ebbetts Pass was opened in the early 1850s. Today, the Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway in Alpine County passes through glacier-formed valleys and canyons, past ancient volcanic peaks and rugged, snow-covered granite ridges. After continuing on SR 89, the route ends in the town of Markleeville.
