Castro Valley combines expansive landscapes, lakes, traces of history and a variety of options for active days. Those choosing a vacation rental or holiday home for their stay can therefore tailor their trip to their own interests: The focus can be on nature experiences, trails through open landscapes, a historical discovery or regional cuisine.

Lakes and Trails for Varied Days

The 315-acre Lake Chabot is stocked with trout and catfish. Around the lake, Lake Chabot offers more than 20 miles of hiking trails. This makes it possible to explore the landscape at a relaxed or more active pace, without conflating the different experiences: The lake represents the waterscape, while the trails provide movement through the surrounding area.

Another prominent area is Don Castro Regional Park. The 101-acre urban oasis lies on the border between Hayward and Castro Valley. At the Don Castro Regional Recreation Area, swimming in the lagoon is the main attraction. Those who want to combine different priorities during their vacation will find a clear contrast here to the longer trail experiences around Lake Chabot.

Five Canyons Open Space encompasses more than 300 acres of open space. The area has five miles of hiking trails and also includes a section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. At 3,304 acres, Anthony Chabot Regional Park is even more expansive. There, hiking, horseback riding and cycling trails lead through grassland, chaparral and shady eucalyptus groves. When planning a stay, it is worth distinguishing between a shorter selection of trails and a larger park area with different types of trails.

History and Local Development

The historic site of the first public school in Castro Valley was part of the original Don Castro Land Grant. Josiah Grover Brickell donated the site in 1866 exclusively for educational purposes. It therefore commemorates the area’s history and the early development of education.

Cull Canyon is also one of the area’s landscape highlights. The site is located along the Chabot-to-Garin Regional Trail, which is being developed between the two parks.

Local Cuisine and Choosing Accommodation

In the center of Castro Valley, Castro Valley Marketplace brings together local restaurants, handcrafted foods, specialty shops and wine in one easily walkable location. This complements the natural and cultural experiences with a culinary perspective. If local cuisine is one of your travel priorities, you can take this focus into account when choosing accommodation. You should then check the specific amenities, prices and availability in the respective listing.
