Pope County combines expansive bodies of water, clear streams, forest landscapes and cultural discoveries. Lake Dardanelle State Park is located five miles from Interstate 40 and offers opportunities for camping, boating and wildlife observation. When planning your trip, the main question is therefore whether you would like to focus on water, nature, history or regional events.

Lakes and Rivers for Active Days

The main area of Lake Dardanelle State Park is located in Russellville on a 34,300-acre reservoir. A fishing pier and a visitor center with aquariums holding 8,000 gallons each round out the park's facilities. Park interpreters lead programs and lake tours. The park is also recognized as a Trail of Tears National Historic Site; exhibits on the Russellville side focus on the history of the forced removal.

At the Arkansas River Visitor Center at the Russellville Site Office, you can learn about the development of the River Valley from its settlement by Indigenous peoples to the present day. The center also offers a view of the Dardanelle Lock and Dam. Students can use an interactive computer model to operate a lock chamber and simulate the passage of a towboat and its barge through the locks.

Water-based experiences are also an important part of the area away from the reservoir. Old Post Road offers opportunities for boating, birdwatching and cycling. There are 37 reservable campsites with water and electrical hookups. The Longpool Recreation Area is a developed campground on Big Piney Creek. The section of Big Piney Creek between Treat and Long Pool is a ten-mile canoe trip. The clear mountain stream flows through Pope County past rocky bluffs and gravel bars. Big Piney Creek and the North Fork of the Illinois Bayou also offer opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

Nature Trails, Forests and Fishing

The Ozark National Forest reaches the northern boundary of Pope County. The Ozark Highlands Trail runs across the entire width of the Piney Creeks WMA. Those who enjoy combining longer nature experiences with a trip can plan to make these landscapes a focus of their itinerary.

For shorter trails, Bona Dea Trails & Sanctuary offers a different way to observe nature. The area encompasses 186 acres of wetlands and open woodland that provide habitat for numerous wildlife species. Nearly six miles of trails run through the sanctuary. You can walk, jog, practice nature photography and observe animals there.

At Lake Atkins, a recreation area was created from Galla Creek and Horsehead Creek. The lake covers 752 acres. Fishing is available there for bream, crappie, catfish and largemouth bass. In Atkins, Picklefest celebrates the town's pickle tradition annually on the third weekend in May.

History, Art and Regional Traditions

The Potts Inn Museum is located in one of the best-preserved stagecoach stops along the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The museum is housed in a restored antebellum home built approximately between 1850 and 1858; the grounds also include five log cabins. The Center for the Arts features a theater with 1,875 seats. The Norman Hall Art Gallery is located on the campus of Arkansas Tech University in the Norman Hall building.

Regional life is also part of the travel experience. The Pope County Fair has been an annual Pope County tradition since 1941. The Pope County Farmers Market in the Russellville area offers locally grown fruits and vegetables, meat, honey and eggs, along with locally made baked goods and crafts.

Choose the Right Location for Your Accommodation

When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home, it is worth deciding on your preferred type of trip first. Russellville is a practical location to search near if Lake Dardanelle State Park, the Arkansas River Visitor Center and cultural offerings are part of your plans. Atkins places Lake Atkins, fishing and Picklefest at the center of your trip. For nature-focused days, you can also consider the area around Long Pool, Big Piney Creek or Bona Dea Trails & Sanctuary as a search criterion. This way, your choice of accommodation is guided by the experiences you actually plan to include.
