Craighead: Discover Nature, Water and Culture
Accommodation in Craighead
Craighead combines impressive landscapes, water-based experiences and a diverse cultural scene. Crowley’s Ridge runs through the center of Craighead County, while the St. Francis Floodway in the southeast offers opportunities for fishing and duck hunting. This creates a varied mix for planning your trip: you can combine days in nature, active excursions and visits to museums or historic districts.
Landscape, Lakes and Trails
One defining natural area is the St. Francis Sunken Lands WMA. Its scattered areas in Craighead County lie within the St. Francis Floodway; in total, the area covers more than 30,574 acres across three counties. Bottomland hardwood forests define the forest type there. The area offers opportunities for wildlife viewing and birdwatching, making it particularly appealing to travelers who enjoy spending their days outdoors.
St. Francis Lake also offers a range of activities. You can fish there for catfish, largemouth bass, sunfish and crappie. Boat access is available via Siphons Access and Oak Donnick Access. North of Jonesboro, Lake Frierson State Park also offers fishing, boating and trails along a 335-acre lake. The different waterscapes make it easier to decide whether fishing, wildlife observation or a lakeside outing should be the focus of your holiday planning.
At Craighead Forest Park, you can experience the landscape of Crowley’s Ridge in an urban park covering 692 acres. Active days there can include around 13 miles of mountain biking trails, a 2.4-mile gravel path along the lakeshore and a 3.2-mile paved loop road. The Forrest L. Wood Crowley’s Ridge Nature Center complements this focus with 3.1 miles of trails as well as indoor and outdoor exhibits, films and information about the ridge and its native wildlife. The Nature Center is connected to Craighead Forest Park.

Jonesboro offers several different ways to explore regional history. The two-story Craighead County Courthouse, Western District, was built in 1934 in the Art Deco style at the intersection of Main and Washington Streets. The lawn features a monument to a World War I soldier and a plaque commemorating Hattie Caraway. The Arkansas State College Historic District forms the historic core of the Arkansas State University campus and commemorates the development of higher education in Northeast Arkansas.
The Arkansas State University Museum presents the landscapes, wildlife and cultural traditions of Northeast Arkansas and the northern Mississippi River Delta. Tours, hands-on activities, events and outreach programs offer various ways to get to know the region. The Bradbury Art Museum takes a different approach: it presents changing exhibitions by local and national contemporary artists and offers workshops, lectures, artist visits, community events and tours.
Historic Downtown Jonesboro is also one of the area’s cultural attractions. Events are held in local shops; interactive art sculptures are used for education, play and making music together. In Monette, the Buffalo Island Museum preserves artifacts, photographs and memories from Monette, Black Oak, Caraway, Leachville, Manila and the surrounding area. It was founded in September 1997 by Gerald “Boots” Pitts and is located in Monette’s historic First National Bank building, which has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 2008. The A.A.C.C. at the E. Boone Watson Center additionally presents the history of Craighead County’s African American community, including its hardships, achievements and hopes.
