Mckinley Park is an exciting starting point for travelers who want to combine nature experiences, insights into Alaska, and active days. The town’s proximity to the entrance of Denali National Park defines the area: visitors can meet rangers, explore hiking trails, take part in guided walks, or plan various day trips from Denali Park. Getting there is also flexible, as the town can be reached via the George Parks Highway and by the Alaska Railroad.

Get to Know Denali: Visitor Centers and Ranger Experiences

The Denali Visitor Center offers a well-rounded introduction to the park’s landscape and history. There, you can talk to park rangers, watch the film “Heartbeats of Denali,” and explore an exhibition area. This makes the visitor center a good place to start when gathering your first impressions or planning the rest of the day around a particular theme.

From June through mid-September, ranger-guided walks are offered in Denali every year. One of these walks begins at the Denali Visitor Center, and registration is not required. The tour may range from easy to moderate and cover up to 1.5 miles round trip. This makes it a practical way to explore the area with a ranger without planning a full day of hiking.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

Most hiking trails in Denali are accessible from the Denali Visitor Center. Near the entrance to Denali National Park, the Horseshoe Lake Trail follows a 2.8-mile loop through boreal forest and leads to a scenic lake. The trail combines a forest landscape and a waterside experience in a manageable loop.

Another option is the Mt. Healy Overlook Trail. This 2.7-mile round-trip trail also runs near the entrance to Denali National Park and climbs partway up Mt. Healy. If you want to choose between a loop through the forest and a trail with an ascent when planning your day, you will find two clearly different hiking options here.
