Talladega offers very different perspectives: motorsport history, historic architecture, art, and a distinctive forest landscape. You can take these into account when choosing a vacation rental, depending on what you want to shape your stay.

Motorsport History and the Hall of Fame

Talladega Superspeedway was built in 1969. It is located on Speedway Boulevard, which runs parallel to Interstate 20. These landmarks also offer practical reference points for planning your trip. The International Motorsports Hall of Fame offers a compact introduction on a self-guided walking tour that takes about an hour. Allow approximately one hour for this tour; check the latest visitor information before your visit. The Hall of Fame also includes three exhibition halls and the McCaig-Wellborn Motorsports Research Library.

The Talladega Walk of Fame in Davey Allison Memorial Park offers another way to commemorate motorsport: it features memorial plaques dedicated to race car drivers. The Hall of Fame, research collection, and memorial plaques each offer a different focus—from exhibitions and research to remembering individual drivers.

Art, Remembrance, and a Storied History

The Amistad Murals by Hale Woodruff are on permanent display at the Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art. The series was installed at the museum in 2020. Its three murals depict the revolt aboard the ship, the trial before the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Africans' arrival on the coast of Africa accompanied by American missionaries. The Civil Rights Garden, which honors prominent civil rights leaders of the 20th century, is right next to the museum. The art and garden offer different perspectives: the murals tell the story of specific events in the Amistad history, while the garden honors people from the civil rights movement.

The Jemison-Carnegie Heritage Hall also brings history and art together. Built in 1906, the building originally served as Talladega's public library. Today, the Jemison-Carnegie Heritage Hall Museum features exhibitions by local and regional artists. It also offers art classes, lectures, and workshops for adults throughout the year; check the current program schedule for specific dates.

Architecture and Local History

Talladega's Silk Stocking District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 13, 1979. Its architectural styles include Queen Anne, Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, and American Craftsman, as well as other late Victorian styles. This range makes the district interesting to anyone drawn not only to individual buildings but also to different forms of architectural expression.

McAlpine Place is one of the oldest houses in Talladega County and was built several years before the city of Talladega was founded. Manning Hall at the Academy for the Blind offers another historical perspective: the Academy's first class of blind students attended there on April 1, 1867. Reuben Asbury taught the students, and his wife, Cassandra, served as housemother. The DeForest Chapel features 17 stained-glass windows by David C. Driskell. Together, these names and details offer insight into very different aspects of history—from early education to art and architecture.

Forest Landscapes and Destinations in Talladega County

The city of Talladega borders the Talladega National Forest, which encompasses 375,000 acres of rolling hills and low mountains. This offers a different focus from the historic buildings and museums: the landscape describes the natural setting adjoining the city.

The historic Kymulga Grist Mill, Park, and Covered Bridge complex is located in the unincorporated community of Alpine in Talladega County. The complex includes nature trails. Kymulga Mill and the covered bridge were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The site thus pairs nature trails with two structures that each have their own place in history. Majestic Caverns in Childersburg is a privately operated cave system with guided tours. Operating conditions may change, so it's best to check them before traveling there.

Different Interests, Thoughtful Location Choices

The Historic Ritz Theatre adds to the cultural options, too: it presents two seasons a year featuring national concerts, Broadway shows, and local theater productions. The program may change, so check the current schedule for specific dates. This gives you a range of topics and formats to choose from when planning your trip—from a self-guided walking tour to theater, art, and nature trails. If your travel group has different interests, this may help you decide on your itinerary.
