St. Clair County connects the southern tip of the Appalachian Mountain Range with river landscapes, wooded mountains, quiet valleys and areas crossed by clear streams. The Coosa River forms the county’s eastern boundary. This creates a destination where you can combine days by the water, walks, hikes and historical discoveries. When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home, it is worth first deciding on your preferred focus: water activities, nature experiences, museums or a varied mix.

Water Experiences on the Coosa River and at the Lakes

The backwaters created by dams in St. Clair County are suitable for fishing, boating, water skiing, sailing and swimming. Those who want to bring together different interests within their travel group can therefore plan their days around the respective water activity. Greensport Marina offers boating opportunities. Double Cove Park also has a beach and a protected swimming area.

Lakeside Park in Pell City also places a clear emphasis on the water. It covers 65 acres and borders Logan Martin Lake. Walking paths and fishing piers add to the opportunities for spending time at the lake. Big Canoe Creek, which is more than 50 miles long, runs through St. Clair County and adds another distinctive waterway to the region’s landscape.

Trails, Rocks and Nature Experiences

Several different types of trails are available for active days. Double Cove Park has hiking trails ranging from slightly more than one mile to just under two miles. Ten Islands Historical Park has a well-maintained trail that follows an arm of the lake; its trails are just under two miles long in total. The park also has a boat ramp and is part of the Alabama Birding Trails. Those interested in the history of the landscape can find settlement traces there from Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian cultures.

A special landscape awaits you at Horse Pens 40. A large boulder field made of Precambrian sandstone is preserved there. Self-guided trails run between and through the large boulders, complemented by an elevated boardwalk through scattered deciduous forests. Horse Pens 40 also offers bouldering; the densely packed sandstone formations provide more challenging climbing conditions. This allows you to choose between quiet nature observation, trail exploration and a more athletic excursion.

History, Museums and Regional Traditions

Ten Islands Historic Park preserves traces of several cultures and combines the natural environment with the past. The Ragland Depot Museum focuses on artifacts related to railroad history and the history of Ragland. A monument near Ragland commemorates Fort Strother, a supply camp built by Andrew Jackson in 1813 that was used during the Indian Wars.

In Springville, the Springville Museum takes visitors through the city’s history, people, events and artifacts. The museum includes a children’s area, a historic kitchen and a music room. The Springville Library & Museum lists opening hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The Ashville Museum and Archives lists hours from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The festivals at Homestead Hollow also provide insights into earlier ways of life. They include pioneer demonstrations such as wood carving and blacksmithing, cooking demonstrations on a wood-burning stove, and tours of original cabins built by early settlers. The John W. Inzer Museum is part of the Alabama Bicentennial Trail and offers educational tours. The Inzer Home Museum can be visited by prior appointment through the County Tourism Office; appointments can be made by phone at 205-594-2116.

Choose the Right Starting Point

For travel orientation, Interstate 59 connects St. Clair County with Birmingham and Chattanooga. The John Looney House is being rebuilt after the devastating fire in August 2022; at the same time, the building had already been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. These different time periods make clear that a trip through St. Clair County can encompass both current visitor experiences and historical connections.
