Etowah opens the door to a journey through waterscapes, hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and culture. The Noccalula Falls are particularly impressive: the water plunges 90 feet into the gorge of Black Creek. The waterfalls are fed exclusively by Black Creek, so their flow depends on precipitation. This destination therefore offers not only a spectacular gorge but also a natural experience whose appearance is shaped by the weather.

Nature Experiences for Different Daily Itineraries

Admission to Noccalula Falls Park includes a pioneer village, an animal habitat, a botanical garden, a train ride, and access to the hike below the waterfalls. The pioneer village features hand-hewn log cabins and provides an impression of living conditions during pioneer times. Those who enjoy exploring on foot will find eight trails and connecting paths in the Black Creek Trail System for walking, running, hiking, and cycling.

The Black Creek Trail is a 1.7-mile gravel path next to the wedding chapel at Noccalula Falls Campground. Guided hikes for the Black Creek Trail System are scheduled for the second and fourth Saturdays in April, May, June, September, and October, weather permitting. These dates may be of interest if you would like to include an organized hike in your trip planning.

Riverside Areas, Lake, and Wildlife Viewing

The waterways also give the region its own character. The Coosa River runs through Gadsden and is part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail there. At Coosa Landing, the Riverwalk Trail follows the riverbank for just under a mile. It includes boardwalks and a gravel path. Coosa Landing also has a four-lane boat ramp and parking for approximately 125 trucks and boat trailers.

H. Neely Henry Lake covers more than 11,000 acres and was created on June 2, 1966, by impounding the Coosa River. At James D. Martin Wildlife Park, a shoreline trail and boardwalks lead into the 300-acre lake and to wooded islands at the mouth of Black Creek. During seasonal wildlife viewing, bald eagles can occasionally be seen in winter. Ospreys are observed from March through November; a nearby rookery of great egrets, great blue herons, and black-crowned night herons is of interest in spring and summer.

Family-Friendly Discoveries and Art

If you are traveling with children, the Children's Museum Imagination Place is primarily intended for children ages 2 to 10. The permanent KidsTown USA exhibit consists of child-friendly settings such as a doctor's office, a grocery store, a construction site, and Grandma's House. For a cultural activity, the Gadsden Museum of Art offers five art galleries as well as a historical exhibition with artifacts and information about surrounding cities in Etowah County. Admission to the museum is free.

The Gadsden Museum of Art opened its first exhibition on January 17, 1965. The Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts also offers an accessible cultural experience: the art exhibitions and model railroad can be viewed free of charge, as can the ground-floor gallery where exhibitions are held.

City History and More Travel Ideas

Historic Downtown Gadsden features historic buildings and historic architecture. Local events such as First Friday and Third Thursday take place there. Attalla offers a different historical perspective: the town is located on the site of an Indigenous village that was of considerable importance during the Creek War from 1813 to 1814.

For activities on the water, Big Wills Outfitters rents watercraft for trips on the scenic Big Wills Creek. Fish caught in the fishing waters near Gadsden include spotted bass, crappie, largemouth bass, striped bass, and catfish. Wills Creek Vineyards & Winery is part of the Alabama Wine Trail.

Choose the Right Accommodation for Your Interests

When searching for a vacation rental or holiday home, you can use your preferred daily itinerary as a starting point. Nature lovers may consider waterfalls, riverside trails, lakes, and seasonal birdwatching; families may focus on the age range served by Imagination Place and the various offerings at Noccalula Falls Park. If art, architecture, and history are the main priorities, museums, Historic Downtown Gadsden, and the history of Attalla can round out your trip planning.
