Dekalb County combines the distinctive landscapes of the Southern Appalachians with waterfalls, long hiking trails and a surprisingly diverse cultural scene. When planning a trip, you can choose between active days in the state parks, special nature experiences, and theaters, museums or glassblowing. A vacation rental or vacation home in Dekalb County can suit different travel plans, depending on whether nature or the cultural program is intended to be the main focus.

Mountains, Canyons and Waterfalls

DeSoto State Park is located on Lookout Mountain and features numerous rushing waterfalls. The Little River Canyon National Preserve is also one of the region’s defining landscapes: It is a Southern Appalachian landscape through which the Little River flows for the most part on Lookout Mountain. For families who enjoy combining different types of excursions, this combination offers a clear contrast between scenic views, river landscapes and hiking experiences.

Buck’s Pocket State Park extends across Sand Mountain and the counties of DeKalb, Jackson and Marshall. More than 15 miles of hiking trails are available there. The Little River Canyon National Preserve offers even more than 26 miles of hiking trails. Those choosing accommodation for a vacation with plenty of activity can therefore pay particular attention to whether extended hiking days or individual nature stops better suit their travel plans.

Water Experiences for Different Preferences

Little River Falls is a 45-foot-high waterfall. An ADA-accessible walkway leads to a viewpoint near the falls. The Little Falls Trail, by contrast, is 0.75 miles long and descends to the river via 137 stone steps. These two options can be viewed as different forms of nature experience: a viewpoint at the waterfall or a trail leading down to the river.

In the Little River Canyon National Preserve, kayaking is possible on various sections of the river in winter and spring. The range extends from Class III sections to Class IV, V and VI rapids. The exact choice of activity is therefore an important consideration when planning a trip. The DeSoto Scout Trail also connects the Little River Canyon National Preserve and DeSoto State Park through the Wildlife Management Area in the backcountry. Another easy trail connects the Jacksonville State University Little River Canyon Center with Little River Falls and crosses the river via the pedestrian walkway of the Highway 35 bridge.

Culture Between Theater, Museum and Glass

Fort Payne offers several independent cultural attractions as a change of pace from hiking. The Fort Payne Opera House was built in 1889 and is Alabama’s oldest theater in a building originally constructed as a theater. Theater performances are still held there regularly. The Fort Payne Depot Museum is located in a pink sandstone depot in the Richardson Romanesque style dating from 1891.

Music history and crafts also have their own place. The Alabama Band Fan Club & Museum in Fort Payne presents the history, awards and youth collections of the country music group Alabama. Orbix Hot Glass showcases glasswork in a gallery where you can view and purchase glass pieces, as well as attend demonstrations and glassblowing classes. The hands-on classes include creating ornaments, bowls, drinking vessels and paperweights. This allows you to add experiences to your stay that are not focused solely on nature and hiking.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans

If you mainly want to experience waterfalls, canyons and hiking trails, your vacation rental in Dekalb County should suit a travel plan with active days and changing nature destinations. For a more balanced vacation, you can combine nature excursions with a theater visit, a museum and a glassblowing class. What matters less is a general classification than which experiences you want to combine during your stay.

When planning an excursion to DeSoto State Park or DeSoto Falls, Alabama State Parks points out that GPS directions can be very unreliable. This information should be taken into account when preparing for the respective drive. For additional destinations, you can also include Fort Payne and Rainsville in your research.
