Dale County: Museums, Murals and River Scenery
Accommodation in Dale County
Dale County offers a diverse mix of local history, military aviation, murals, and activities on lakes and rivers. These varied themes give you concrete starting points for planning: should your stay focus on museums and historic sites, or are sports and river access more important?
Museums and History
The U.S. Army Aviation Museum in Daleville has a collection of more than 160 military aircraft. This makes military aviation a particularly tangible part of a visit to the region. Additional proof of identity may be required before arriving to access the museum. Check the current visitor information in advance.
The U.S. Army Warrant Officer Museum honors the legacy of warrant officers. It opened on February 23, 2024, at the Holman House in Ozark. The Holman House showcases the history of Ozark, Dale County, and Fort Rucker. Members of the Ozark Heritage Association lead tours of the house; ask in advance about current tour availability.
Newton also combines a historic site with a museum: the Oates-Reynolds Memorial Building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974. The building houses the Newton Public Library and Agriculture Museum. If you are planning a visit, ask in advance about visitor access.
Murals and Visual Art
In Ozark, the Dale County Music & Theater Mural depicts people from Dale County who have excelled in music or theater. You can find it at 184 E. Broad Street. The Welcome To Ozark Mural is on Andrews Avenue next to D.A. Smith Middle School and honors military service. Another mural commemorates Wilbur Jackson, the football player from Ozark.
The Dowling Museum and the Ann Rudd Art Center feature rotating visual art exhibits. They also offer educational workshops, other educational programs, and special events. Alongside the murals, they provide an opportunity to explore changing art themes and organized educational activities.
Lakes, Trails and Sports
Lake Tholocco covers 676.8 acres and is on the West Beach side of Fort Rucker. The Fort Rucker Riding Stables are surrounded by more than 10,000 acres of wooded trails. Riding lessons in all disciplines are offered there for people aged five and older; confirm availability in advance.
Cycling, hiking, fishing, and archery are available at Ed Lisenby Lake. These activities range from getting around on foot or by bike to fishing and archery. Silver Wings Golf Club features gently rolling elevation changes and fairways lined with deciduous and coniferous trees. Community members who are not affiliated with the military may participate in activities at Silver Wings Golf Course, subject to operating rules and available capacity. Check the current participation requirements before visiting.
River Access and Events
The Choctawhatchee River runs along Dale County’s southern boundary. The Dale County Road 36 Bridge provides access to the West Fork of the Choctawhatchee River. Browns Crossroads is the farthest upstream established public access point on the Choctawhatchee River. If river access matters to your plans, distinguish between access to the West Fork and the farther upstream access point on the Choctawhatchee River.
The Claybank Jamboree is an arts and crafts festival and has been a family event for more than 50 years. It takes place every year on the first Saturday in October; check the exact date before your trip. The Ozark Farmers’ Market is designated as a state-certified farmers market.
When choosing a vacation rental, you can use your specific destinations as a guide: the museum in Daleville, the murals and Holman House in Ozark, and the activities mentioned at lakes and rivers each offer a different focus. For a general sense of direction, U.S. 231 is the main route through Dale County, running from southeast to northwest.
