Cullman County: Water, Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Cullman County
Cullman County offers a wide variety of ways to spend your vacation: time by the water, trails through wooded gorge country, and cultural sites with German, agricultural and local history. When planning your accommodation, it helps to first decide whether nature, water or culture should shape the rhythm of your days.
Water and Outdoor Recreation
Smith Lake is known for its clear water and picturesque shoreline. Boating, fishing and swimming are all possible at the lake. Smith Lake Park also offers swimming, camping and fishing; its facilities include a public beach, boat ramps and playgrounds. This gives you a range of ways to spend time outdoors: if you’re traveling with children, for example, you can make the playground a specific part of your plans, while boating and fishing offer other options.
Another place to enjoy the outdoors is Duck River, a 640-acre artificial reservoir that is open to the public. Along with Smith Lake, it gives you another reason to plan a water-focused outing in Cullman County.
Gorge Scenery and Driving Trails
At Hurricane Creek Park, the landscape is shaped by a deep gorge carved by Hurricane Creek. Numerous trails wind through wooded terrain and past rock formations and cliffs. Here, the terrain and wooded trails are the focus of an outing. If you’d like to experience nature trails and striking rock landscapes, consider making this a focus when planning your days.
Stony Lonesome OHV Park is geared toward riding ATVs, dirt bikes and side-by-sides. Its trails range from easy rides to more challenging climbs, catering to different experience levels. Park rules and schedules may change; check them before your visit.
History and Public Art
Clarkson Covered Bridge was built in 1904 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1974. The construction date and later listing mark two distinct points in time: the creation of the structure and its addition to the register.
The Cullman County Museum is housed in a replica of John Cullmann’s home and presents the history of Native Americans in the Cullman area. Guided tours are available on request; check in advance to confirm current visiting options. Other sites also offer their own historical highlights: the Crooked Creek Civil War Museum is located in the historic 19th-century Vinemont Stagecoach Inn. Weiss Cottage contains 19th-century furnishings as well as some of Aldo Weiss’s original medical equipment. Ave Maria Grotto opened in 1934 on the site of a former quarry used by the abbey.
The Cullman Murals are a growing outdoor art experience in the Warehouse District and are part of the statewide Alabama Mural Trail. At Art Park on 2nd Street SW, large-scale sculptures also serve as seating, shade and gathering places. The cultural side of a trip thus includes both historic sites and art found in public spaces.
Agriculture, Food and Seasonal Activities

The Christkindlmarkt is inspired by traditional German Christmas markets and features seasonal food and shopping. Event dates vary; check the dates before planning your trip around them.
