Andalusia, Alabama, can be explored through its historic square, murals and several cultural venues. The city was laid out in a square around a plaza that now serves as the courthouse square. The Historic Andalusia Murals are located on buildings in the downtown area. They can add character to a city walk, but this does not mean there is an official tour or that indoor spaces are always accessible.

Railroad and City History

The Three Notch Museum is housed in the former Central of Georgia Railway depot; the grounds also include a large Norfolk Southern caboose. The name “Three Notch” recalls the historic road that ran through this area and gave local roads their names. The museum, depot and road name each tell a different aspect of transportation history. Check current museum hours before planning an indoor visit.

Church Street School was built in 1923. The Alabama Historical Commission recognized it as an outstanding example of the Mission Revival style. After renovation, the building is used as the Church Street Cultural Arts Center and is home to the Andalusia Ballet. Its performances take place at the Dixon Center for Performing Arts; the ballet presents four productions a year, including “The Nutcracker.” The building and performance venue should not be confused.

Memorials and Other Architectural History

The Covington County Veterans’ Memorial Park was dedicated on Veterans Day in November 2004. Its stainless-steel obelisk is 42 feet tall and stands on a black granite base. The park is a memorial site that deserves a respectful visit. Springdale was built in 1937 as the home of John G. Scherf and includes the main house, garage, guest house, lake, fountains and lawns. The historical description alone does not establish that the property is open for public tours.

Markets and Events

The Andalusia Farmers Market is held on the lawn in front of the Kiwanis Community Center. The Covington County Fair is described as taking place annually in October. The World Championship Domino Tournament is listed for the second weekend in July and includes singles and doubles tournaments for children and adults. These recurring listings are not a substitute for a current calendar; check dates and conditions before traveling.

You can choose accommodation in Andalusia based on your interest in a downtown walk, a performance or a particular event. Compare the actual location with the venue for the event in question. For nature excursions, Conecuh National Forest lies in the region between Andalusia and the Florida border; it is not an urban park and requires separate route planning. For markets, performances and historic buildings, check separately what will actually be available during your stay. An annual tradition does not guarantee an unchanged calendar or a venue that is open every day. If you are traveling specifically for a tournament, fair or ballet performance, verifying the confirmed date before booking is essential.
