The former Vega Alta firehouse was established in 1949; today, the building is home to La Casa del Artesano, part of the Departamento de Cultura y Turismo. Another connection between design and local history can be found in the sculpture Ilusión de caña y coral at the Centro de Recepciones Domingo “Juniquín” Figueroa Ramírez on Carr. #2. Impressions of local history that informed his work are recorded in the book Vega Alta ayer y hoy, written by Tapia’s mother, Silvia Martínez (Mrs. Tapia). The sculpture’s form evokes cranes used in sugarcane processing, as well as the letters V and A in Vega Alta. The artwork thus brings together a reference to sugarcane processing and the town’s initials.

Historical Dates and the Bosque de Vega

The Antigua Estación de Tren de Vega Alta was inaugurated in 1907 and ceased operations in 1945. These two dates mark clear milestones in the area’s railroad history. A more recent date is associated with the Mariposario de la Vega: it was inaugurated on July 1, 2025, at the main entrance to Bosque Vega on Road 676 in Vega Alta. In the wider region, the Bosque de Vega extends across Vega Baja and Vega Alta in six sections. It covers a total of 1,185 cuerdas. Its karst landscape features mogotes, sinkholes, karst caves, and underground caves; these formations were created as water dissolved the limestone. The sinkholes are natural recharge areas for Puerto Rico’s northern aquifer and help protect the island’s underground water reserves. This nature-focused option extends beyond Vega Alta’s cultural sites to include a forest that spans two municipalities.
