Fajardo between Coast, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Fajardo
In Fajardo, discoveries range from a crescent-shaped beach to mangroves and a bioluminescent lagoon, as well as a museum of local art. The coast, nature and culture each add a different dimension to your stay.
Explore Coastal Landscapes and Nature
Within the municipality, Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve contains nearly all of Puerto Rico’s natural coastal communities in a relatively small area. For nature lovers, this diversity offers a special glimpse of the different habitats along the coast.
A guided tour of the reserve covers dry forest, seagrass beds and various types of beach. It follows a wooden boardwalk through mangroves to Laguna Grande de Fajardo, the bioluminescent lagoon. Technically, Laguna Grande is a lagoon, not a bay. Check with Para la Naturaleza for current tour availability.
The “Observación de Aves con un Propósito” excursion focuses on something different: it teaches you to identify birds by their songs and visits a mangrove area, a beach and an active lighthouse. Ask the provider about current availability.
The two excursions appeal to different interests: the guided reserve tour focuses on habitats and the route to the lagoon, while the birdwatching excursion combines identifying birds by their songs with several coastal stops.
Seven Seas: Beach Shape and Shade
Balneario Seven Seas is about 2,000 feet long and 165 feet wide. Two rocky outcrops and an offshore coral reef help keep the water calm. The crescent-shaped beach is lined with palm and almond trees that provide shade. A comparison of the approximate measurements shows that Seven Seas is about twelve times as long as it is wide, giving it an elongated appearance.
Amenities listed for Seven Seas include pavilions, lifeguards, wheelchair-accessible access and camping. Camping requires a permit for a fee. Check which amenities are currently available before your visit.
Local Art and Culture
Casa Cultural Joaquín Mouliert is a museum that celebrates the life and work of Joaquín Mouliert and other local artists. It adds a cultural perspective on local art to the nature and coastal themes. If you’re planning a visit, check in advance on current visiting options.
