San Buenaventura is the specific location for your holiday rental search. The following cultural and natural attractions are in the broader destination of Distrito Federal, ranging from Mexica history and art collections to the lake landscape of Xochimilco and the green spaces of Bosque de Chapultepec. This variety offers different points of reference for planning your trip, depending on whether you would like to focus on historic buildings, museum collections or landscapes.

History and Art in Distrito Federal

The Templo Mayor, in the heart of present-day Ciudad de México, was the religious and political centre of the Mexica. Impressive remains of the temple dedicated to the gods Tláloc and Huitzilopochtli have been preserved. These include a tzompantli altar and the Casa de las Águilas; the treasures also include the monolithic effigy of the goddess Coyolxauhqui. The religious dedication and the named artefacts provide several concrete points of reference for its history, from the temple complex to individual surviving works.

The Museo Nacional de Antropología offers a different way to explore cultural heritage and is considered one of the most important museums preserving Mexico’s Indigenous heritage. Its textile hall contains 512 pieces in eight thematic sections. It explains clothing techniques and how raw materials are processed. This focus on textiles and craftsmanship complements the archaeological evidence of the Templo Mayor with a distinct perspective.

Castillo de Chapultepec also brings together architectural and museum history. The magnificent building was constructed between 1785 and 1787 on the orders of Bernardo de Gálvez, Viceroy of New Spain, as a country retreat. In 1939, a presidential decree designated the Castillo as a museum to preserve collections and objects belonging to prominent figures in Mexican history; it opened for this purpose in September 1944. The Museo Nacional de Historia Castillo de Chapultepec is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours again before your visit.

Art and the period in which it was created take centre stage at the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes. The venue opened on 29 November 1934 as the Museo de Artes Plásticas, making it Mexico’s first art museum. Seventeen murals by seven Mexican artists, created between 1928 and 1963, are on permanent display there. This timespan also makes the murals a distinct overview of different artistic works from the 20th century.

Lakeside Landscapes and Urban Green Spaces

The lake landscape of Xochimilco preserves the only reminder of the traditional settlement of the lakes in the Basin of Mexico before the Spanish conquest. In contrast to the museums and buildings, the focus here is on the historic relationship between landscape and settlement.

Bosque de Chapultepec covers more than 800 hectares, divided into four sections. The First Section has areas surrounded by nature for running, walking and cycling. It can be reached via Chapultepec and Auditorio Metro stations: Chapultepec is on the pink line, and Auditorio is on the orange line. Check traffic conditions before travelling. In 2003, the Bosque was designated an Área de Valor Ambiental in the Bosque Urbano category by decree.

The history of Casa del Lago is also connected to the development of the park. Its origins date back to 1906. At that time, on the orders of Porfirio Díaz, Bosque de Chapultepec was turned into a public park for celebrations marking the centenary of independence; the lakes at the foot of the castle hill were created as part of the project. Thus, alongside archaeological and artistic themes, Distrito Federal also offers insight into the creation and design of its green spaces and lakeside landscapes.

For planning your trip, the themes can be clearly distinguished: Templo Mayor and Castillo de Chapultepec represent historic sites; the museums, collections and art; Xochimilco, the history of the lakes; and Chapultepec, paths through a large park landscape. If you are looking for a holiday rental in San Buenaventura, you can prioritise these attractions according to what interests you most during your trip.
