Atlacomulco de Fabela combines cultural and historical discoveries with a variety of parks. Churches and murals offer insights into the town’s history, while museums, picnic areas and recreational activities round out the picture. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would rather focus on art and historic buildings or spend time outdoors. These interests can also guide you when choosing a vacation rental for your stay.

Museum, Exhibitions and Murals

The Museo Histórico de Atlacomulco has seven permanent exhibition rooms and one room for temporary exhibitions. This gives museum visits two different perspectives: the permanent exhibitions form the museum’s core, while the additional room is set aside for changing presentations. The museum offers both general and guided tours.

Throughout the year, the museum presents exhibitions by artists from the region, from elsewhere in the country and from abroad. The works on display include paintings, ceramics, sculptures, textiles and pieces made from resin. Visitors interested in visual art will find a range of materials and forms of expression under one roof. In the historic center, murals in the alleyways also tell the story of the municipality’s development, prominent figures, traditional crafts and festivals. Former producers and businesses are also depicted. Museum collections and murals therefore offer different points of focus: the former center on exhibitions, while the latter feature scenes from local life and history.

Churches and Local Tradition

The Santuario del Señor del Huerto was built in 1811 in the neoclassical style. Its two pink-stone towers with blue mosaic decorations are particularly striking. The Parroquia de Santa María de Guadalupe offers a glimpse of a different historic architectural style: it was built between 1600 and 1640 in the Plateresque style.

Inside the Parroquia are a hand-carved red cedar altarpiece in the Churrigueresque style and a stone-carved baptismal font. Its coat of arms was apparently used as a symbol of Atlacomulco. The façade features a public clock that is about 150 years old and is considered a historic monument. The two churches thus differ visibly in their styles, materials and details. Señor del Huerto, the patron saint of Atlacomulco, is honored each year on the third Sunday in September. For travelers interested in religious traditions, this date is part of the town’s annual calendar.

Parks for Nature and Shared Activities

Parque Bicentenario offers playgrounds, picnic tables and exercise equipment, as well as games for people with disabilities. The park is also home to Casa de la Tierra and the Museo Histórico de Atlacomulco. Casa de la Tierra and the environmental education center on climate change use real-time projections to show global environmental and social phenomena. In this park, recreational activities and themed exhibitions sit side by side.

Parque Atlacomulco covers 19.5 hectares within the city limits. Its preserved ecosystems include birds, among them ducks, as well as pine and oak trees and ornamental plants. Those who want to include nature alongside culture during their stay will find a different kind of park here than at Bicentenario: the focus is on ecosystems and plant life.

At Parque Recreativo “Las Fuentes,” visitors can picnic and barbecue. Facilities include grills, palapas, swimming pools, children’s games, showers and a basketball court. The three parks thus differ in their stated priorities: environmental education and play facilities, preserved ecosystems, or recreational options with swimming pools and barbecue areas. These differences can help you plan your days around the interests of your travel group.
